Although for the most part, levels of chemicals and contaminants are at safe levels, there are some areas in which the water quality is so deteriorated that chemicals are now at dangerous levels. Unfortunately there are treatment plants that remain that are using outdated techniques and are still disinfecting with chlorine, which itself is a major cancer causing toxin. According to recent surveys, there are up to at least 2,100 toxic chemicals that come out of taps, including cycsts, modern pharmaceuticals, chlorine, lead and volatile organic chemicals. People are of course concerned about the damaging long term effects of all of these toxins from taps in households and buildings, but according to experts at the University of Illinois, they are responsible for tens of thousands of deaths each year in the United States, so it seems that filters used in homes and buildings may be the best defense. Why are Illinois water treatment plants (and others in a majority of other states) having such a difficult time with the filtration? Basically the plants just can not cope with the amount of water that needs filtering, and disinfecting with chlorine is a cheap option even though it really is not effective against lead and many prescription drugs.
As more chemicals are used in all facets of industry and agriculture, the problem grows larger and larger. We live in a culture of mass consumption, and the price we pay is all of the nasty waste in our water. It is scary, but the chemicals that can be found in tap water have been linked to leukemia, cancer and learning disorders. Did you know that the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality believes that the majority of cancers in the United States are linked to the toxins in our drinking water? Astonishing, isnt it? It would take an incredible overhaul of our treatment plants to even start to get rid of these deadly contaminants, and since only a small percentage of water is used for drinking, those at the top think that it is just not cost effective.
Our only option instead of having Illinois water treatment plants take care of every little contaminant is to filter the water at home ourselves and get rid of as many chemicals as we can out of our tap water.
