Why Don't More People Buy Ingredients Online?

Why Don't More People Buy Ingredients Online?

As the saying goes, you can't make a pig's ear out of a silk purse

, or something like that, and the same is true with cooking. If you buy ingredients that are of mediocre or average quality then it's going to be almost impossible to create a banquet of food which is truly exceptional. You are what you eat, and what you eat is based on how you buy ingredients, which ingredients you choose, and where those ingredients have come from.

For many people relatively little thought is given to where they go in order to buy ingredients for their meals. In the majority of cases it tends to be the supermarket which is chosen. This isn't because the supermarket provides excellent quality and range, although I wouldn't wish to suggest in this article that the ingredients offered by supermarkets are of poor quality. They are merely average, vanilla, beige, appealing to the common denominator.

You can hardly blame the supermarkets for doing this, after all it's what their business is based on. But there is a price to be paid for providing ingredients and products which sell well and can be marked at a highly competitive price. The price to be paid is choice, specifically, removing the choice for customers to buy ingredients that are of an exceptional quality.

In many cases the reason for doing this is because such high-quality ingredients are likely to be a little more expensive, and therefore will sell less frequently. Supermarkets have to look at turning over their stock regularly, and with some gourmet ingredients this is just not likely to happen. Therefore, for the majority of people looking to buy ingredients that are of a gourmet standard, there is relatively little choice.

You may be fortunate and live in a town or city where local shops specialise in providing gourmet ingredients, but such retailers are few and far between. Their stock is likely to be limited to a certain type of ingredient, presenting you with the same difficulty as before. Trying to buy ingredients that are of a high standard, and not just categorised within a single area, makes producing a range of gourmet dishes something of a challenge.

The internet has brought us many advantages, and online shopping is certainly one of them, providing more of us with more choice, and with more competition pushing the price much further down. But although a great many people will admit to using the internet to purchase a range of goods, from books and movies to clothes and household products, surprisingly few people have used the internet to buy ingredients.

When asked, most people admit that it really hasn't even crossed their mind to do so, and with the supermarket providing quick and easy access to a range of ingredients and products, there seems relatively little point. But you wouldn't paint your entire house beige simply because your local supermarket didn't provide any other colour paint. You would look elsewhere, go further afield, and perhaps even explore the opportunity of purchasing paint online. Yet when it comes to buying ingredients we don't tends to have the same approach.

If this all sounds rather familiar, then it may be important to realise that next time you are looking to buy ingredients, not just for everyday food, but perhaps for a special occasion such as a dinner party or family get-together, have a look online and discover the gourmet ingredients which are available, including French ingredients and gourmet products which can help to lift your cooking to an entirely new level. There really is no need to always buy beige ingredients, and the Internet provides more benefits than simply cheap books and DVDs.
