Why Children Find Bugs Intriguing
Sometimes it is not until later in life that we begin to feel less than thrilled with insects
. Whether it goes back to the first time we were stung, an unpleasant memory of being tortured by a sibling, or just our general apprehension that does not exist when we are little, few adults like insects. On the other hand, children are often fascinated by things that crawl and fly, and they seem to lack that certain something that leaves people feeling grossed out when they see something scurry across the floor. Many children find bugs intriguing, but each has their own reasons or combination of reasons for their fascination. If your child is drawn to bugs, allow them to explore this miniature residents of nature and try to determine what it is that fascinates them.Sometimes it is the size that makes children feel at ease. While a large dog or even an adult body can intimidate a child, something that seems tiny to them will catch their attention. While it is not cute and furry, there is still something settling about finding something so little in a world where you are normally the smallest thing. Exploring the world of an insect may help your child feel in control and give them a sensation of growing up.
Another benefit of insects being tiny is that children can pick them up. While it is not a great idea to just grab at any bug that passes by, their tiny fingers and hands are the perfect size to let the right bugs crawl around. If your child has a desire to touch bugs, direct them toward fireflies and caterpillars. Gently holding these bugs will harm neither the child, nor the creature, but they will have the experience of exploring a bug hands-on.
A lot of bugs look weird. While this may be one of the reasons for adults being uncomfortable with the idea of bugs invading their space, it may be the exact reasons why kids love them so much. Things that are weird, gross and unusual thrill kids who have a natural curiosity for teh bizarre. Looking at something that makes no sense at all and that can do unusual things like squirt, sting, leak, and change color can fascinate a child more than any video game or television. If your child expresses an interest in the unusual, encourage their exploration with books, nature walks, and trips to the zoo.
The most important reason kids may like bugs is the fact that you do not. The fact that a grown up can be frightened of something they are not at all alarmed by is a thrill for them. Seeing your reaction to something that does not threaten them in the least will probably send them into a fit of giggles. If a child is able to "rescue" you from a bug by taking it outside or squishing it with his shoe, he will be delighted for days. As children grow into adults, they may learn to fear bugs or just lost their childhood interest in them, but for at least a few years of their life, insects will bring them thrills.
