Why Buy Local?

Why Buy Local?

Buying local has many benefits, from those to the environment

, to those to the community and while these factors are undoubtedly very important, there are benefits available to you as a shopper too. When you buy locally grown meat, vegetables and fruit and products which are made from these local ingredients, you are buying into your local community and supporting farmers and growers who make the face of Britain what it is today.

Without these farmers Britain would look very different, the countryside would probably be far more industrialised in an attempt to support the economy with other forms of income and trade and the choice on the shelves of your local food store would also probably look very different.

The environment can benefit hugely from us all buying locally, with a reduction in the cost of miles your food has to travel to get from where it is grown to your plate. Food air miles seriously add up when you think of all the out of season produce which is available from your local food store from overseas producers and how often this fresh produce must have to be shipped and how far. The problem some people have with buying produce from their local farmer is that they can only buy what is in season and if they fancy asparagus in the winter for example, it wont be available and the power of choice is what keeps people from staying loyal to local.

But the benefits of buying locally are not just to do with supporting your local community or to do with reducing the huge carbon footprint that foreign grown food is stamping on the planet, they are also to do with you and the products you receive. Local produce is bound, by its very nature, to be fresher than something that has been flown half way across the world and been out of the ground for more than a few hours and as a result, fresher produce equals tastier produce that is packed full of flavour. Often the secret to the delicious food which you eat in expensive restaurants is the quality of the ingredients which the chefs use and you will find that a big selling point of a lot of restaurants these days is the sourcing of these locally. Treat yourself to the same level of taste and quality by buying local food from your local food store, you really will be able to taste the superior flavour.
