Most of us have a yearning to visit more than one country during our lifetimes
. Some of us actually have the opportunity to do so. An American might be surprised to learn that the US is not in first place, even with the help of Disney World. France is actually the country that receives the most tourist in the world. It's location, close to all the major European markets, its historical heritage and comparative good weather make it a great year-long destination for neighboring Europeans.
Spain comes in a close second place because of its good weather and relative low prices. The United States is the third destination in the world followed by China, Italy, UK, Germany, Mexico, Austria and the Russian Federation
Surprisingly, the number of visitors does not tell the whole story. Measured by the amount of money tourists spend, France comes in a distant third place behind the USA. By this measure the US captures almost double the amount of dollars as compared to the second runner-up, Spain. Italy is fourth followed by China, UK, Germany, Australia, Turkey and Austria.
The US is the undisputed economic winner when it comes to tourist-dollars because of the plethora of destinations and activities that the country offers. No country in the world comes close to offering the world-class, attractions, lodging and transportation infrastructure that the US has.
Perhaps one of the main reasons the US is the undisputed leader is economic winner in the tourism game is the relative low cost of its offerings. A quick glance at the most expensive cities in the world gives us an idea of how the US ranks in terms of cost. The most expensive city in the world in 2008 was Moscow followed by Tokyo, London, Oslo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Copenhagen, Geneva and others. New York, the most expensive city, comes in 22nd place.
The US receives 49 million visitors each year. It is not surprising to learn that more than half of these visitors come from our two closest neighbors: Canada (14M) and Mexico (13M). The other nationalities that visit the US are UK, Japan, Germany, France, South Korea, Australia, Italy and Brazil.
Do these destinations match your personal travel wish list? For most of us in affluent countries the answer would be that this list is a close approximation our travel aspirations.
