The Nikon D800 is a professional grade full-frame digital single-lens reflex camera produced by Nikon. It was officially announced on February 7, 2012 and went on sale in late March 2012 for the suggested retail price of $2999.95 in the U.S., 2399 in the UK, and 2892 in the Eurozone.

Buy Nikon D800. The DSLR line from the two biggies in the camera world, Nikon and Canon, has seen important updates recently. While Nikon is hedging its bets on the 36-megapixel D800, Canon responded by releasing the flagship EOS 5D Mark III.

Photography enthusiasts all over have one dream when it comes to hardware, and that is to own a full-frame sensor camera. They are way more expensive than standard DSLR cameras.

With the camera world divided pretty much straight down the middle, Canon and Nikon fans refuse to acknowledge mere existence of the rival camps' cameras. And once you throw in the subjectivity that comes in while judging factors like image quality and performance, it's not uncommon for both set of fans to look the other way when confronted with uncomfortable facts.

While we acknowledge that there's a lot to a camera that cannot be captured by pure numbers, to avoid accusations of any kind of bias, we'll strict to the pure specifications for the sake of this comparison.

The D800s sensor has 36.3 megapixels, and it seems every one of them is good. The camera was tested shooting portraits, sports and landscapes, and even scores close to the best medium-format cameras. DxOMark even said that the sensor has no weak points.

When looking at bit depth, which refers to the ability of a sensor to distinguish minor variations in color and thus render an image closest to what the human eye sees, the D800 scored higher than any other full frame camera yet tested, falling behind only two medium format models, which are different animals altogether but on who's territory Nikon is openly looking to horn in on with the D800. Result: bit depth of 25.3.

Nikon concedes that UK customers may have to wait to get their hands on the D800 DSLR, despite last week stating that shortages were limited to the Japanese market.

On 21 March, Nikon told Amateur Photographer (AP) that supply shortages would not affect the UK market, adding that it will 'work to supply the D800 to customers as quickly as possible when it goes on sale on 22 March'.

Yesterday, however, UK dealer Robert White told AP that the D800 may not be available until early April.

In a bid to clarify the position, Nikon last night released a further statement which reads: 'We've seen an unprecedented level of interest in the D800, with increased demand and orders for the new camera.

'Whilst we are delighted that the D800 is proving incredibly popular, we recognize that this may mean increased waiting time for some customers.

'We are working closely with our trade partners to maximise distribution and ensure customer orders are met as quickly as possible.'

Yesterday, Nikon announced that the D800 will cost 2599.99 200 more than it said the camera would cost when it was unveiled to the UK press last month.

Moving onto dynamic range is where the best news of all may lie. In everyday terms, dynamic range refers to the ability of a camera to capture different variations of light to dark before clipping to white (light) or black (dark). Needless to say, the greater the dynamic range, the greater amount of detail can be extracted from light or dark areas, not to mention everything in between, too. As for the D800, it was measured as having a dynamic range of a whopping 14.4EV, the best of any camera ever tested, dSLR or medium format.

It has class-leading colour depth and dynamic range, the best AF and metering system you'll find anywhere, and it produces amazingly detailed noise-free images even at moderately high ISO settings. It's essentially a D4 with a higher resolution sensor, in a smaller and lighter body, and for about half the price, and is going to be a massive hit with landscape, portrait and studio photographers. Its continuous frame rate is a bit slower than the EOS 5D Mark III, but that's not going to earn it any bad marks from me.
