What to Ask Sellers in Online Live Auctions

Items at live auctions are sold as is, so you need to know everything about the item before you commit to bidding online. Because online live auctions are extensions of in-person live auctions, sellers and their staff will be increasingly busy as the auction approaches. Therefore, it is important to ask questions as soon as you see the product.

Start with the Basics

Many live auction catalogs contain hundreds if not thousands of items. It is time consuming for auctioneers to upload thoroughly detailed information on each lot. This is why descriptions on online auction pages seem so short.

For example, if you are thinking about buying a limited edition giclee art print, you would want to know how many prints were made and the number of your print. If the number isn't listed in the online auction catalog, then you should contact the auctioneer.

Follow your instincts and common sense. Questions that you would normally ask while shopping are a good place to start when asking questions about online live auctions. What is it made of? What size is it? Who made it?

Determining the Condition of an Item

It can be difficult to judge the condition of an item just by looking at a single photograph. However, prospective bidders should feel comfortable in asking auctioneers of internet live auctions to post additional images of an item.

This is particularly important when buying an item that is listed as an antique. You want to be able to see how the item was put together. If you see a Phillips head screw, it's not an antique or it has been clumsily repaired.

You may also want to contact the auctioneer to ask how the auction house grades its antiques. "Very Good" in one place may be "Excellent" at another place.

Although such systems are based on individual perception, there are certain things auction houses look for to grade an item such as normal wear from use versus water damage.

Fine Print: Terms, Deposits, and Premiums

Live auction sites, in general, must list their terms for each auction. You should read these terms before you bid and make sure you understand your obligations if you win.

Live auctions generally require that you pay a premium after winning an item. Some houses charge more so you'll want to make sure you know what it is so you can determine how much you'll want to bid online.

A few places require that you make a refundable deposit. If you submit a winning bid, your deposit will be applied to the total amount you owe.

This is also a good time to go through the seller's shipping policies. Not all sellers offer shipping, and if they do, they may not offer shipping on items over a certain size. If you bid online but are picking up the item, make sure you know how many days the auction house will hold your purchase.

Terms may vary by item, so make sure you read them so you can contact the seller with any questions.
