London is considered to be one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. There are 300 languages spoken in London and there are over 50 non-indigenous communities. Some ethnic settlements are more significant than others and some of them have been in the city for about three centuries.

The Bangladeshi community has been in London from the 19th century and most of them came into the city to trade in textiles. When this trade declined, the community started taking part in other forms of business including banking and restaurants. The Bangladesh community is concentrated in Whitechapel and Bethnal Green. There are more than half a million Bangladeshi nationals in the city.

The Chinese are also found in large numbers in London. They are spread throughout the city and they are the most successful ethnic group, especially in the restaurant business. Ghanaians and Nigerians also form a large percentage of the African groups living in this city. They are found in Brent, Croydon, Haringey, Newham, Lambeth, Southwark, Hackney and Lewisham.

Indians form the largest group of ethnic communities in the city and some of the generations have been born unto the country. About 7% of the city's population comprises of Indians.

The city also has a large number of Irish people because of its proximity to Ireland. Millions of British people have Irish relations.

Jamaicans can also be found in the city in large numbers. Most of them came into the country to work in the NHS, London transport and British rail. They were used to help the British economy recover after the World War 2.

The Southern Boroughs area of the city is home to the largest number of Nigerians in the country. The first group of Nigerians came into the city during the slave trade but several Nigerians came into the country to work as skilled workers in the 20th century. Most Nigerians in the city live in Peckham and they have even put up some mosques and churches in the area. Most of the Nigerian immigrants have become assimilated and English is now a predominant language. Nigerians form the largest number of African people in the country.

Some of the other ethnic groups found in the city include Pakistanis, Russians, South Africans, Kenyans, Ugandans, Brazilians, Iraqis, Polish, Filipinos, Colombians, Sri Lankans and Ecuadorians.
