What are American Values?
When we talk about a value system, we must first have a basis off which to work.
The basis for the following is the same basis that our Founding Fathers proposed in the birthing of this nation.
At the time of separation from English rule, our Founding Fathers had to agree on a set of Values that typified the creation of a new nation, something that set aside this fledgling nation from every other nation on the face of the earth.
The focus had to remain consistently on the dignity of man, and the freedom previously
unheard of. Our Founding Fathers had given themselves a daunting task, a task that would raise up a nation that people would be able to improve as time went on if they would adhere to the fundamental principals set forth in both the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution of The United States, although the latter document at that time was still unfinished the basic list of rights was already becoming what we today know as the Bill of Rights, which by the was came into being because of George Mason who at first was the most vocal of the dissenters at the Pennsylvania State House in 1787 because "it has no declaration of rights." When his argument proved out, it gave birth to the "Bill of Rights" as patterned after the "Virginia Declaration of Rights"
The purpose of these Documents was to set forth a "System of Government" never before seen on the face of this earth, to delineate the limits of power of a central government and determine the amount of representation per state to that central government.
The one thing that has set us apart is the right and duty of the general population to actively participate in this central government by voicing agreement with or against any proposal of change to the Constitution. Since it's inception, there have been changes to the Constitution as decreed by the voice (vote) of the people. September 25, 1789 twelve amendments were presented to the First Congress of the United States for ratification Amendments 1 & 2 which had to do with the number of constituents for each representative and the compensation for Congressmen were not ratified. Articles 3 12 were ratified by three quarters of the assembly and became the first 10 Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, also known as the "Bill of Rights" From February 7th, 1795 onward until May 7th, 1992 Amendments 11 27 were added to and ratified as part of the Constitution, causing this to be a living document, a reflection of the ever changing face of the citizen populace of the United States of America.
This fluidity is what gave us the ability to change with growth, but, this change is a grave responsibility for the citizens of this country in that the changes to be proposed were not always geared to the overall citizenry of this country, as a matter of fact some of the proposed changes that were suggested, both then and now were actually favoring a select group of individuals. The perplexity of governance gave passageway to rise of bureaucracy and fringe groups who would vie for the leadership of this country in a manner which befit their agendas.
Our Founding Fathers knowing in advance the tactics which would be employed built into the defining documents certain safeguards to prevent the rise of such exclusionary groups who ran the gamut from far left to far right in today's vernacular.
The United States of America was founded on the principal of equality, dignity, justice, and central most freedom. Being a citizen of this country in the view of the Founding Fathers was a privilege that was granted on the basis of opting in and fulfilling the responsibilities of citizenship, which at that time as well as this time meant abiding by the laws of this country, participating in the process of governance, and vocalizing the wrongs as well as the rights of a free nation.
There is no singular voice which can declare what is right for the masses, it is the collective voice of the people that make that declaration as they did during the birth of this nation.
