People can have a nerve condition in which messages for different things are not able to be sent to their muscles, and these conditions are classified as neuromuscular disorders. One example of this type of disorder is Bells Palsy, where one side of a patients face is paralyzed. This specialized type of dentistry relates to the teeth being involved in the muscle structure along with the bones and the joints as well, which is why it goes beyond the surface of the tooth.

The dentist will not only work as a dentist but will also serve as a neurologist and even a physical therapist as well. How about an acupuncturist? This is not out of the question, either. Although acupuncture has not been adopted on the whole in neuromuscular dentistry, there have been cases in which chronic pain had been minimized by this type of care. In most states however, a person would have to be referred to a licensed physician to have acupuncture performed.
Since many conditions that patients present to their dentist involve several symptoms other than the main culprit, proper care of patients is becoming an overlapping group effort and they should be. For example, if a patient presents TMJ to their professional in neuromuscular dentistry and they have other associated issues such as ringing in the ears, pain in the neck, back and shoulders, vertigo and migraine headaches, they need help from other medical professionals in addition to the dentist to complete their care.
