What To Wear For Spring Weather In Calgary

, the grass is green, the trees are starting to bud, and what makes it really beautiful is that yesterday the snow was flying so hard it was moving sideways. That's what spring is like in Calgary, though. We have sunny days with blue skies, and then without a warning another winter storm comes raging through. Even residents who have lived here their entire lives have trouble dressing for the chaos that is Calgary springtime, but I have some tips to help with that.First thing is to get yourself into a well-made soft-shell jacket. As opposed to your typical rain jackets, soft-shells are not composed of a Nylon layer over GoreTex (or a similar material). Soft-shells are typically made out of a blend of nylon, spandex, lycra, and polyester. They aren't intrinsically waterproof, but they do have a durable water repellent added to them. A soft-shell jacket will keep you warm and dry in most weather, and many people in Calgary wear them habitually so you won't look out of place. The catch is that the waterproofing won't last forever. Every year or two you'll have to buy some wash-in waterproofing to renew the water repellancy of your jackte. However, considering that it's a $10 bottle, and you only have to do it once a year, it's still a pretty good deal.
It might also be a good idea to acquire some Gore Tex lined shoes. More and more styles are being made with this feature added to them, and it works remarkably well. Keep in mind, that while the shoes are porous enough that they still breathe, they do not breathe well. This means you'll have to be careful not to let them get too stinky. Also, they are very waterproof but there really isn't any material, anywhere, that is actually %100 waterproof. However, in terms of Gore Tex lined shoes, unless you try and stand in a creek for longer than a few seconds, you don't have much to worry about. There are even some shoes being made with a waterproof liner that are modeled after dress shoes, so you can wear them to work without having to switch out when you get into the office.
Your legs may get a little wet, there's just no way to wear rain pants around and still command the slightest iota of respect. However, there's still a couple of tricks you can try to keep dry this spring. Toques, gloves, and layered clothing. Keep a toque and a pair of light gloves at your office, wear some layers, and you'll never get surprised by inclement weather at work again.
