What To Expect From A Family Doctor Hearing Test
A hearing test conducted by your family doctor is a basic one
. It is often one you should have when you are exposed to regular noise or when you are subjected to loud sounds even if it is not often. In addition, as you approach age 50 and above, your doctor may request that you have a screening on a regular basis to ensure that your ability to hear is not slowly diminishing. It is very common for individuals not to notice this is happening until the problem becomes significantly. However, a family doctor is the perfect person to help guide these decisions.
What to Expect
When you go in to see your family doctor for this type of hearing test, he or she will work directly with you to gauge what type of loss you may have. Sometimes, doctors conduct the simplest of tests possible. They simply stand behind you, a few week away, and whisper a question to see if you've heard them. If not, they may conduct a more thorough screening onsite. Generally, you can ask for this type of screening as well.
You will then have a set of headphones placed over your ears. Most of the time, this type of evaluation only takes a few minutes and it is not invasive. You will just need to raise your hand or hit a button every time you hear a sound through the headphones. This can provide some information and indication to the doctor if you are experience loss because the sounds will range in type and in volume. The family doctor type of screening is only basic and does not provide a great deal of information about why things are happening, just that they are.
What Happens Then?
Depending on the outcome of this basic screening, your family doctor may request that you have a more thorough evaluation conducted by an audiologist, who specializes in these tests. This type of testing can provide you with more information, guidance about what is happening, and how bad it may be. These professionals also work with you to better understand if you need to use a special device that can make sounds louder. This is not something that your family doctor can do for you because most do not have the high tech equipment for these more thorough screenings.
For many people, a basic hearing test done by their family doctor is the first step in learning if there is anything to be worried about. Generally, this is something you should have done annually especially as you get older. If you need further evaluation, you can begin learning more about any loss you have.
