A Devonshire Family Holiday
North Devon is one of the most beautiful places in the British Isles for a holiday
. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend break, a family holiday, or an excuse to go away with friends, there is something to suit everyone. Devon has breathtaking scenery, rugged cliffs and wild coastlines, but it is also famous for some of the countrys best beaches. Many of these are quiet and secluded but some of the more popular ones are so because of their fantastic surfing potential. You can spend your days discovering hidden coves, strolling along the many footpaths, enjoying the best of Englands weather and getting a taste of some of the most famous of Englands regional foods. Staying in one of the many holiday cottages in Devon gives you the flexibility to plan your stay and tailor it to suit your interests and ideas. Regardless of where you decide to stay this diverse county with so much to offer will not disappoint.
Days out
Holiday cottages in Devon are a great accommodation choice for families and groups of friends. You are free to come and go as you please and can really make the most of some of the local attractions. While the region has incredible natural beauty, and days could be spent exploring the uplands or walking the beaches, there is also much more action to be had.
Take a trip to Exmoor Zoo and let your family get close to the animals that live there. The physical contact with the animals is what makes this zoo different from the norm. The children will love helping at feeding times, handling the animals and learning about the way they live. It is certainly a very family orientated experience. There is a constant influx and efflux of animals, so even repeat visitors will have something new to see.
Another wildlife gem is the aquarium, which gives you a real idea of life under the water around the coastline here. The aquarium replicates the natural habitat of many local aquatic species. Have you ever thought about the journey of a river from its source to the coast? It is all explained here. Children are encouraged to engage and ask questions and are even given a quiz to complete as they go around.
If the weather is good and you want to spend some time on the beach you have no shortage of options. No matter which of the holiday cottages in Devon you decide to book, you are never far from the sea. Tunnels Beach is a great one for exploring as it is made up of a network of hand carved tunnels that lead to sheltered beaches. The beach is an expanse of grey sand and shingle and is dramatically backed by cliffs, which adds to its stunning location. While you relax and soak up the southern sun, the kids can try fishing, snorkelling or rock pooling. The main network of four tunnels is definitely worth a visit. Carved in the 1820s, it is now lit up during the night so you can actually explore at any time.
Lee Bay beach, known as The Jewel in the Crown of Lee, is a designated "area of outstanding natural beauty". The beach is rocky but very dramatic. Located below Lee Abbey and close to the quaint town of Lee, this beach is deservedly famous in the area. There are several walks you can do in the immediate area and if you are here at the right time of year you will be mesmerised by the scarlet flowers that bloom from the hedgerows and make a very pretty picture indeed.
A special holiday based in one of the beautiful holiday cottages in Devon is just waiting to be yours.
