What Sweet Thing Did You Eat For Christmas

Share: Christmas has just passed us all again, bringing with it a whole new treasure of memories to share
. It's a time of gathering and celebrating, a time for seeing family and friends that we haven't capped eye on in ages, time for seeing how much the children have grown and for sharing the odd bit of gossip.
But Christmas isn't just about get-togethers, is it? No - it's about food. We walk in, check our diet at the door and promise ourselves that we'll pick it back up just as soon as we're done enjoying the holiday. After all, how can we fully enjoy the festivities without indulging ourselves just a little? Or a lot?
This year my family had to cut a few corners in order to get the sweet things on the table before the guests got too demanding. Luckily, we've learned a few tricks for getting the cookies and cakes out there quickly and without too much fuss.
For instance, my family likes to used the boxed cake mixes available at the market. There's no harm in it, after all, they're just premixed dry ingredients. They save you time and are quite flexible. Throw in chopped pecans to a chocolate mix or a cup of espresso for the coffee lovers in the family. Also, look on the back of the box for simple recipe ideas. However, if you'll take my advice you'll make your own batch of frosting. Packaged frostings do tend to have a taste that shouts where it came from. Retain your dignity and make your own before Aunt Esme begins wagging her finger at you.

Share: Also, we like to use packaged cookie dough. They make great cookies. We buy the sugar cookie dough, bake it, and then let the kiddies decorate them with coloured sugar and sprinkles. They love sampling their work afterwards and it keeps them from getting bored. After all, everyone should be able to enjoy themselves during the holiday season, and you can worry about clean-up later.
If you're really in a pinch, you can run down to your local market and get a few pound cakes, angel cakes and bundt cakes to hold the crowd over while you're busy in the kitchen. The great thing about these types of cakes is that they're versatile and can be dressed up anyway you like. Cut a square of pound cake for the gentlemen in the fold, give it a splash of rum and drizzle it with chocolate and you've got a hit. Slice a few strawberries and add a dollop of whipped cream for the ladies. Use your imagination, and you'll be able to get away with a few shortcuts during the holiday season.
