There are a lot of people who look forward to traveling a lot before retiring but life is hardly one trip after another in retirement according to a survey of typical retirees. For a female doctor from the University of California at Berkeley, she interviewed about 700 retired people who represented the retired population of San Antonio, Texas. In this case, 40 percent had not been out of town for more than three years, half of the group took a trip as often as once a year, and some never traveled.
Usually, less than six percent of the retirees journeys outside the country each month. Other than having 20 percent of the trips going to visiting relatives, 10 percent of the out of town travel by retirees was to visit their children.
A lack of money is what hinders many retirees from traveling. Taking frequent trips are the 10 percent of the San Antonio retirees with annual incomes of above $5,000. Even if they have the same income level, Black or Mexican American retirees traveled less than the rest. On the other hand, the younger retirees traveled more, as did those who considered themselves to be in good health. Taking cars either as drivers or passengers is a third of those who traveled as often as once a year. Going by bus is another third, 20 percent flew, and 15 percent went by train.
Those who traveled by bus were not delighted with the transportation. When it comes to this kind of transportation, specific disadvantages were mentioned like the difficulties of getting a bus to the place one wanted to go or the inconvenient time at which the bus left or arrived. She was able to speak with two thirds of the retirees who have never flown and half who have never been able to ride a train. People who flew liked the experience but they used the airlines mainly to visit relatives. What was possible with land transportation was sightseeing and this is why the retirees liked it. About a fifth of the plane trips catered to vacations. In this case, the major complaints when it comes to train travel include the inconvenient schedules, poor connections, and inadequate passenger service, both at the station and in transit.
When it comes to half of these people, the way that they will travel more by train is if the passenger services, schedules, and equipment were somewhat improved. When it comes to retirement travel, trains have their fair share of advantages because they are relaxing, carefree, enjoyable, comfortable, leisurely, convenient, safe, and sociable, and when there was no pressure on time and the purpose of the trip was enjoyment trains were also an excellent way to go traveling, see the sights, and meet interesting people. It is possible to enjoy the companionship of other people while doing some sightseeing and this is why train travel has been described to be relaxing and carefree as well. Considering half of those she interviewed, they said that they would probably go places by train if the service was improved, but the California researcher doubts that this will happen.
It is the bus and the airplane that most people consider to be the only options for retirement travel. She has a warning for the transportation industry, though. What retirees will not do is flock to the ticket counters. Unless there is special attention to their needs, both as older persons and as leisure oriented travelers, she asserted, many may decide that the disadvantages of the trip outweigh the pleasures of traveling and decide to stay home.
