A newly delivered baby will be covered in a gooey combination of blood and a whitish substance. The baby may look bluish and be covered with fine hair called 'lanugo'. Lanugo will eventually disappear after a few weeks.
The first interest that the new parents wish to do with the newly born baby is to see and hold him or her. However, with this uneasy and nervous feeling, mostly, new parents have a hard time doing it, which on the contrary, many people would believe that this could affect the bonding relationship, behavior and health of the baby.
Newborn infants tend to sleep - a lot. In fact, most of the time, in their first few weeks, will be spent sleeping and eating. Their sleeping patterns will be erratic at first but eventually they will be able to adjust to the usual day-night sleeping patterns that most adults have.
Normally, new born baby's breath very fast as you notice most of the time. It has average of 60 breaths per minute.
Sometimes, an infant will even cease breathing for 10 seconds or so. This occurrence is perfectly normal and termed as 'periodic breathing'.
Seeing the umbilical cord after it is cut might be also terrifying. This is not to be worried too much because this will eventually heal. Just avoid touching it with your bare hands to prevent from causing infection.
