The Keys To A Successful Parenting Team

Most of the time, being a parent means being a part of a team

. Between the two of you, you have the responsibility for your child and this doesn't stop when they become 18. Rather, it never stops and they will always be looking to you for advice and counsel. You have the benefit of your wisdom and experience to give them.

Being a parent is a very timely and demanding thing to do, especially if you have young children. They are constantly going to be asking things of you. Taking them places and doing things for them whether it is feeding, bathing or dressing them. Most of all you are going to supervise them and answer their questions.

It isn't fair for it all to be on one parent so be conscious of this. Split up the duties and make sure that too much isn't falling on one parent. If one parent is staying at home, the one who doesn't should try and make an extra effort when they get back. Take a load off them and allow them to somewhat relax. It's about compromise and communication.

Likewise you should divide up tasks that work to your strengths. If you are good at cooking then you should make the meals. If you are good at art, you should do art projects with your child or children. This is how it should be. It makes sense for it to be like this.

If you like to play games, there is nothing wrong with playing games with them; games such as Connect 4, Hungry Hippo and bingo. There is an added educational benefit to games such as bingo and scrabble which can benefit them in later life. The most important thing to remember is that you don't have to beat your child every time you play bingo or chess with them. If you do, they may want to stop playing with you.

Your kids may feel more comfortable discussing and confiding with one parent over another. This is natural as the relationship they have with both parents isn't the same. If this is the case, you need to be able to handle this confidence in a mature and intelligent way. You need to be careful what you do with this sensitive and delicate information. The last thing you want is to damage the relationship and for them to no longer trust you.

While you want to be friendly with your child and have a great relationship with them, you have to remember that you are their parent and not their friend. Keep them at arm's length otherwise things may get compromised. You can love them and want to do everything for them without that line being blurred. If you cross it, things could get messy.

Discipline is important and don't be afraid to use it. This is the case especially if it is warranted. If you don't, they may lose respect for you. This is the last thing you want.
