What Parents Can Leave Behind For Their Children

What Parents Can Leave Behind For Their Children

Heirloom pieces. There are things that we would like to leave to our children. For most of us, these things are personal and with sentimental value. A lot of mothers leave their daughters jewelry and silverware or chinaware. Historically leaving your daughter silverware and ceramics were done during weddings so as to help out with the daughter's new household. The passing on of jewelry from one generation to another had also practical applications. Jewelry is handy and in times of emergency can easily convert to cash. Fathers and sons also had their own traditions. More often than not, if a father was a tradesman or a craftsman, the gift of giving down tools meant that the son could be able to earn a living on his own and be able to start a family. These days it is still being practiced when fathers do give tools to their sons, especially if both shared a fancy for the mechanical. Tools have become a father and son bonding item. There are so many fond memories of fathers working on the weekend on a spare car, be it an old pick up truck or a former 2 door American metal car that has seen its day, to restore it to a condition the vehicle deserves to be. There may have been many hours spent on the car and upon completion, perhaps less words of praise were said about it, but a mutual feeling of accomplishment filled the garage. It is a man thing. Less words but more action is the key bond to a unique relationship among men. The common experience of working together to finish a project brings a closer, tight fit feeling that does not have to be expressed in words.

The more important things that parents do impart on their children are the values and responsibilities needed for kids to survive in the world. The core of what makes a person unique is in the values they hold dear. These are values that have not changed over the years and generation: Be honest, be kind, treat people with respect, learn to be tolerant and learn how to love. The other unsaid treasures parents can leave their kids are happy memories. Such images of shared vacations and cross country journeys may also be filled with arguments and tantrums but in the end, the overall experience should be one that can be talked about fondly in the future. These are the memories that can be shared when parents become grandparents and their kids become parents. In many sense of the word, by remembering what our forefathers went through, they live on forever.
