What Makes A Good Dentist?
There are at least a couple of scenarios that could see you asking yourself the question as to who makes the best dentist
. The first is where you are a person considering going into dentistry, but are unsure as to whether it would be a good fit for you, or rather whether you would be a good fit for it. The second scenario is where you are considering enlisting the services of a dentist (may be a new family dentist upon changing towns), and where you want to know what would make a good choice of a practitioner.
Obviously, the answers to the question as to who makes a good dentist vary - depending on the perspective from which you are asking the question.
If you are asking the question as a prospective consumer of dentistry services, looking for a new dental practitioner, you may want a dentist who is experienced, kind, affordable and available.
The 'experienced' bit will vary from person to person, for virtually every dentist has to be somewhat experienced - given that in most jurisdictions, one can't be allowed to start practicing on their own till they have gone through a considerable period of practical training, internship, and possibly a 'registrar-ship.' But there are people who insist on seeing a bit of 'post-graduation' experience, and a track record of a successful (largely incident-free) practice.
The 'kind' bit comes in particularly handy if you have young kids. In that case, a dentist who comes across as unkind (however caring he may be at heart) could cause the young ones to develop the famous dental phobias, with major implications on their health later in life.
The 'affordable' bit comes in where money is still an issue to you. While dentists tend to charge more or less the same fees (as their professional ethics discourage them from 'under-cutting' each other), there are nonetheless some who charge slightly more than others. This difference can occur, for instance, because of the hospital to which the dentists are affiliated, the part of town they practice in, and so on. The difference tends to be small, but you may find it big enough for you to care. Hence the mention of affordability as one of the things to look for in a dentist, at least for some of us.
Then 'available' bit comes in where you want a professional whom you can visit at any time, in the event of a dental emergency, and a dentist whose diary is not so full that getting time with her becomes near impossible when you need her services most.
On the other hand, if the scenario behind your wanting to know who makes a good dentist is motivated by a desire to make a career in the field, the answer would be a bit different. For to be a good dentist you have to be, among other things, studious, conscientious, caring - and to some extent, a person with an appreciation for beauty, if you consider going into cosmetic dentistry.
