What Is Clomid and How Does It Help You Get Pregnant?

Many women who have been experiencing infertility problems have been able to achieve pregnancy through the use of Clomid

. This drug will have to be prescribed by a physician and will generally be used to help women who have infrequent or irregular menstrual periods, or no menstrual periods at all. Clomid, in effect, stimulates ovulation. The way that Clomid and ovulation work is somewhat complicated, but understanding what happens in the body during ovulation might help to clear things up.

As a woman's cycle progresses from menstruation towards ovulation, changes occur that are essential for the release of an egg to occur. While a woman is having her period, her estrogen levels are low, and these low levels will send a signal to her brain that luteinizing hormones are needed so that developing eggs will be released when they should be. These eggs are developing in ovarian follicles, and the eggs themselves produce estrogen.

When a woman has insufficient luteinizing hormones to cause the egg to develop and ultimately be released, ovulation will not occur. As mentioned above, developing eggs will make estrogen, and if the brain thinks there is already sufficient estrogen in the body, it will not cause luteinizing hormones to be produced. As it turns out the reason why Clomid induces ovulation is because it actually tricks the brain into producing the necessary hormones.

Clomid is taken orally for 5 days of the woman's cycle, generally starting on the fifth day after the beginning of the menstrual period. Clomid actually binds to the receptors in the woman's brain that perceive estrogen, causing the brain to think that not enough estrogen is present. The brain will then send a message to the hypothalamus gland to release the necessary luteinizing hormones. These hormones will cause the eggs to develop and be released at the proper time for ovulation to occur. What Is Clomid and How Does It Help You Get Pregnant?

When efforts to become pregnant have not worked for about a year, the first step is to make an appointment with the doctor. If irregular periods are determined to be a likely cause, then the doctor will probably prescribe clomid to induce ovulation. Clomid has been used for years by many women and is generally safe. As it is taken orally, rather than by injection, it is easy for the woman to use. Dosage is usually fairly low to begin with, but if ovulation does not occur with the standard 50 mg tablet, it will be increased up to 200 mg to try to get the desired results. What Is Clomid and How Does It Help You Get Pregnant?

There are some side effects that can occur while taking Clomid for ovulation, but most women have no problems whatsoever. Multiple births can happen when too many eggs are released, although it is doubtful whether this would bother most couples who are eager to have children. Some women will experience hot flashes or abdominal tenderness during the 5 day regimen, but these symptoms will disappear as soon as the dosage stops. Bloating and weight gain can also occur, but as Clomid is prescribed for ovulation only for a period of several months, most women will accept these side effects.

The success rate of Clomid and ovulation can hardly be disputed. Up to 80% of the women who take it will ovulate in the first month, and of that number 30% will become pregnant. Conception will occur in six months of treatment in about 45% of the cases when Clomid is prescribed. It is a very rare circumstance that Clomid has to be given any longer to induce ovulation.
