What Fees Are Due From American Companies When Shipping To Toronto?

What Fees Are Due From American Companies When Shipping To Toronto?

When a Chicago courier service carries goods from that city to Toronto

, there are some fees and taxes that are going to have to be paid that don't apply when you might just be shipping to another city in the United States. The amount that you have to pay, and which surcharges and fees are going to actually apply, is going to depend on a large part on the actual types of goods that you're shipping with your courier company. The amount that you have to pay is also going to be determined partly by the value of the actual goods that you are shipping.

The first charge that you will have to worry about when shipping to Canada is any of the applicable Canadian taxes that are going to apply to your goods. Either you or your customer is going to be responsible for having to pay these taxes. In Ontario, there is a combined Harmonized Sales Tax, or HST, which applies to the vast majority of goods which are going to be shipped into that province. In order to find out if your goods are going to be subject to that tax you can ask a shipping agent who is familiar with the Canadian taxation laws which apply.

There are also going to be fees charged to you by an international shipping broker anytime you ship something to another country. The trick to saving as much money as possible when using a shipping broker is to realize that their fees are assessed on a flat rate basis. This means that they are going to charge you the same amount every time that you ship something to Canada. The way to save money here is to combine many smaller shipments into one large one. If you can combine enough shipments, it is still possible to save some money even if you have to pay for some short term storage in Canada.

Other fees and duties that you have to pay might be because of the nature of the goods that you are shipping which have other special taxation applied to them. There also situations where you may have to pay in a different way for certain goods if you have to purchase permits or licenses to ship them. The final fee you may have to face is an international shipping surcharge which your courier might apply because of the border delays they are likely to face.
