What Do Think Of When Mid-autumn Festival Comes

What Do Think Of When Mid-autumn Festival Comes

It is a best time to enjoy moonlit night on Mid-Autumn Festival

, which this year falls on 22 September (the 15th of the eighth lunar month). And while holiday parties are welcomed throughout the world, many have mixed feelings about the cakes that come with the season: moon cakes.

The sweet treat has often been described as a fruitcake "Chinese" for its dense texture and the stigma of being outdated. In its traditional incarnation, the mooncake is filled with lotus seed paste and salted duck whole egg yolk, all wrapped in a thin layer of dough. The package is pressed into a mold, which leaves a mark on the decorative top, and baked in the oven.

Mooncake Foods is a cozy cafe located east of Eighth Avenue on 30th Street. It is much bigger than I would have expected, and can accommodate groups of up to four quite easily (though more than ten might be a stretch). The waitress was friendly and helpful, which makes the atmosphere very nice, especially for the area. And she was fully clothed.

The food is pretty good, I had the grilled chicken that was tender and moist, over rice with a big salad that came with the generic Asian carrot orange and ginger dressing. It was orange. Trust me ... but good! However, the dumplings crawfish did not quite do it for me, and neither did the Thai iced tea. I would definitely treat the Vietnamese rolls as an appetizer next time, instead of venturing into unknown territory.

Moon cakes are so crucial to the Mid-Autumn Festival, in a popular myth that it was the mass that started it all. Legend has it that they were moon cakes filled with secret notes and fainted to the Han Chinese rebels to organize a revolt against the Mongols. The cakes were delivered secretly loaded on the 15th day of the eighth month, which became the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival. A second romantic story tells the story of Chang E, Lady of China "on the Moon", who stole the pill of immortality from her husband and hung in the sky, eventually living on the moon.

These days, moon cakes are less about the folklore and more about the business. In the versions made in chocolate, ice cream and "snow skin (rice flour dough is used for flour instead of regular), retailers across Asia hoping to have something for everyone.
