What Do Dental Hygienists Do?

When you go to a large dentist's office, you might not think twice about the person who you see first at your visit

. Well, it is usually the dental hygienist. For other people who live in rural areas, however, there might not be a dental hygienist in the office. The dentist might be the only person around who cleans your teeth and does all of the work. Either way, there are a few things you should know about the dental hygienist that works in many dental offices. It is a career that takes training, dedication, and a lot of knowledge about the inside of your mouth.

Education for Dental Hygienists

Some people mistakenly think that a dental hygienists' job can be done by anyone. Well, technically it can be, but only after that person has completed a training program and gotten an education on dental health. There is a lot of medical knowledge a person in the dental hygienist field needs to know. From all of the teeth names and functions to all of the diseases that can occur in the mouth. The hygienist needs to know it all in order to allow you to have great dental health each time you go in for a visit.

Training programs for a dental hygienist usually run a few months, or even a year long. There is a lot of classwork that is taken so that they can learn the tooth names, diseases, function of each tooth, muscles, gums, and all of the working parts around the mouth.

Different Training They Need

Once the book session part of the class is over, then the program might require a lab or a clinical portion. This is a hands-on experience where the trainee actually cleans a person's teeth and evaluates their dental health first hand. There are special dental offices set up where, in exchange for helping to teach the hygienists, the dental exams are much cheaper.

When the training program is completed, those who have successfully passed the classes and the clinical work, will be given a degree or certificate. Depending on the state you live in, there might also be a licensing exam to take before you can practice in any dentist's office. This will allow the dentist's office to know you have a great education and understanding of dental health for any patient that comes through the door.

Job Outlook for Dental Hygienists

Since the population continues to grow, the outlook for more jobs in the dental industry is excellent. People still eat sweets and forget to floss, therefore there will be a need for dental hygienists to remind them to brush correctly, floss more, and take care of their teeth, or else there will have to be a lot more dental work done in order to keep the smile healthy and white.
