What Are The Causes Of Liver Pain?

What Are The Causes Of Liver Pain?

The first is obvious: what's the cause of my liver pain? But you'll also want to know where will it hurt, how much it will hurt, and how long it will be likely to last. We'll focus on the answers to these questions in this article.

Liver pain doesn't feel identical to everybody. Some people say the amount of pain they suffer is so severe they can barely function. While others say it feels like nothing more a dull ache.

Pain in the liver area ordinarily occurs in the right front side of the trunk, close to the bottom of the chest. For some people however, pain also affects in the area of the right shoulder. It can hurt to breathe or cough.

Liver pains can be linked to a problem with the liver itself, but there can also be secondary pain caused by a problem somewhere else in the body, particularly the gallbladder, blood vessels or bile ducts. But if the pain comes from the liver itself, it is usually because of some type of inflammation. Inflammation is one of the most familiar causes of pain in the liver.

If the pain does not come directly from the liver, it may instead be caused by a blockage of some type in the bile duct by a stone. This sort of pain in the liver area, also known as biliary colic, normally comes on suddenly and can last as long as several hours. Discomfort starts in the upper middle quadrant or right upper quadrant but may well also include the area around the shoulder blades or shoulders.

Pain in the liver area from biliary colic is most likely to occur after consumption a fatty meal. Large, fatty meals put the gallbladder and liver into "cholesterol overload." These organs can't process all the cholesterol as they normally do in these cases. The result is discomfort.

Additional causes of pain in liver area can be cholangitis (inflammation of the bile duct), gallbladder disease, hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver abscess and any number of other liver problems and disorders. On occasion liver cysts also cause liver pain.

Usually, a variety of medications are effective in relieving pain in the liver region. These include NSAIDs, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that lighten symptoms of swelling and pain, meperidine (also known as Demerol), and morphine. Your doctor will prescribe the right medication for your liver pain depending on his or her diagnosis of the cause and the level of irritation.
