The first part of the implant process is to screw titanium pins into the jaw bone. The pins are given time to bond to the bone. This can take two to six months. A temporary cap can be placed over this area. Extensions are then placed on the pins, another two weeks of healing follows. The next step is to place a metal post on the extension. Finally the tooth is placed on the post.
The teeth will last for up to 15 years. At that point they will need to be replaced or repaired. The teeth should be treated as natural teeth, brushed and flossed twice a day. Since they are attached below the gums they look natural. There are not restrictions on food and it can be chewed easily. The bones and gums can remain strong and healthy.
Implant dentistry can mean having a more confident smile. Embarrassing accidents with slipping dentures or clicking can be avoided. Once the titanium is in, it is in for a lifetime. The teeth are quite durable and if taken care of properly, they will last for many years.
