What About Cancer Radiation

What About Cancer Radiation

Cancer Radiation is a cancer therapy wherein high-energy X-rays are directed at a person's body to kill cancer cells and keep them from growing and multiplying. This therapy delivers high doses of radiation so that the radiation will be able to kill the cancer cells and shrink tumors. The negative effect of this is that cancer radiation can also damage normal cells but while the radiation is killing the cancer cells. It also damages the normal cells. Doctors have a choice of whether to give people cancer radiation therapy or combine it with chemotherapy to fight cancer.

The Cancer Radiation therapy maybe given in two ways. It may be given externally or internally. When it is given externally it is through the skin and internally it is done thru injection or by radioactive implant. This is most common with adults. A radiation oncologist is a doctor whose specialty is using radiation to treat cancer. The radiation oncologist will work with other health care professionals to decide on the type and dose of radiation therapy that will best treat a person's cancer. People who are having external radiation treatments usually need not stay in the hospital overnight. They usually visit the hospital or treatment center 5 days a week except on weekends wherein cancer radiation is off .This should be done for 2 to 8 weeks. Getting small daily doses of radiation helps to protect the normal cells from damage. The weekend breaks help the normal cells to recover from radiation. When having the Cancer Radiation therapy, you would be positioned in a way that like you're going to an x ray. A simulator will be used to deliver the exact amount of radiation necessary to kill the cancer cells in the area, which has usually been outlined with ink or a faint tattoo. A few minutes is what it takes for a teen to receive the daily dose of radiation. While the simulator is on, you'll have to lie very still so the radiation is directed to the right place on your body. Some people fear that they might glow as an effect after the radiation, but this is not true.

External Radiations are not radioactive hence after you leave the treatment room of cancer radiation; you can have a normal contact with everyone. Since cancer radiation is a local treatment, usually side effects are surely to appear in the area being treated. The early effects of radiation may be seen a few days or weeks after treatments have started and may continue for several weeks after treatments are completed. It is important to let your doctor know about any skin changes. After the therapy you might experience that your skin in the treatment area may look red, irritated, swollen, blistered, sunburned, or tanned. After a few weeks, your skin may become dry, flaky, itchy, or peel. Most skin reactions go away a few weeks after treatment ends. In some cases, though, the treated skin will stay darker than it was before. These are all normal reactions after undergoing therapy. There are some ways on how to take care of your skin after radiation. Your doctor can help you with that. Hair loss could also be an effect of radiation; other side effects would be low white blood count, vomiting, loss of appetite, these effects might limit your ability for quite sometime but the bright side of this is the cure of your illness.
