In "The Perfect Family," suburban mother and devout Catholic Eileen Cleary (Kathleen Turner) has always kept up appearances
. When she runs for the Catholic Woman of the Year title at her local parishan award she has coveted for yearsher final test is introducing her family to the board for the seal of approval. Now she must finally face the nonconformist family she has been glossing over for years. Her gay daughter, Shannon (Emily Deschanel), a successful lawyer, is about to marry her life partner Angela (Angelique Cabral). Her unhappily married son Frank Jr. (Jason Ritter) is cheating on his wife with the local manicurist. And Eileen's own marriage to a recovered alcoholic is pulling at the seams.This heartfelt dysfunctional family comedy boasts a memorable performance from Academy Award nominee Turner as the conflicted and comical matriarch, alongside a bright ensemble cast including Richard Chamberlain and Michael McGrady. Newcomer director Anne Renton keeps the pacing taut and crafts an honest, modern family tale. Writers Claire V. Riley and Paula Goldberg infuse just the right amount of seriousness and levity into their script, reminding us that family is never truly perfect.
With the unforgiving combination of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, the subsequent alcoholism, weight gain and the kiss-of-death in Hollywood for a woman that is turning 40, she took one of the quickest dissents from Tinsel Towns A-list in record time. She never went away, though. This fighters love for the craft put her in continuing character work across mediums from TV to movies to her most celebrated work on Broadway. Time hasnt been kind to Turner physically (especially in the horrible wig she sports in her latest effort), particularly in juxtaposition to her younger, muy caliente self, yet, it hasnt robbed her of her talent, either, perhaps even making her a stronger actress.
Now, she has the opportunity to strut her stuff as the centerpiece in Anne Rentons The Perfect Family. The title refers to the ideal matriarch Eileen (Kathleen Turner) aspires to in the eyes of the Catholic church and God. Shes up for Catholic Woman of the Year in her local diocese and the award includes the prayer of absolution delivered from a Vatican representative, the ultimate forgiveness that would put this daily repentant womans mind at ease (though she probably wouldn't ever stop confessing, at least, she would have the honor that her ass is covered as far as the after-life is concerned).
Shes a remarkable woman who feeds the elderly and takes care of those who need tending. Good works are her bread and butter. However, the fear that the perception of her non-practicing adult childrens behaviors will cast a negative light on her chances begins to draw out her judgmental nature and wedge itself between her loved ones and what she worked personally her whole life for. This is her time; will she choose the glory of her church or her duties as mother and wife? This quandary would never even enter the mind of her Beverly Sutphin from the comical Serial Mom. With Family, this year we continue to get Christian female characters who arent ridiculed but revered for their values and humanity (see Tyrannosaur, Natural Selection). The lesson Eileen ultimately has to learn is that its neither her job, nor her church-going peers and superiors to judge her familial unit, only God. Her time is better spent doing what she thinks is right while looking out for the well-being of her husband (Michael McGrady) and children (Emily Deschanel, Jason Ritter). By accepting her kids for who they are, she in no way sacrifices the integrity of her faith.
Everyone in the cast hits the right marks and totally gives of themselves in every moment. Sharon Lawrence never overplays her role as Eileen's nemesis Agnes Dunn. Ritter continues to reveal the layers of charm he inherited from his father. Also in the cast is Richard Chamberlain playing man-of-the-cloth Monsignor Murphy with a nod and wink to his iconic role in the 1980's miniseries The Thorn Birds. At the center of it all is Turner, whose every facial movement and beat are a master class in acting. The smokiness of her voice fills the air. Her Eileen is absolutely heartbreakingly real and true and it takes a veteran like Turner to grab the attention of the audience to follow her the entire way. The best scene in the movie involves Eileens discomfort at a formal event where she practically has a cardiac arrest. Turners eye-darting and shortness of breath almost top the timing of her later delivery of the classic line, I dont have to think Im Catholic.
The quality of this venture is TV-level for the most part, meaning the content, themes and style are something that would fit in the size of, let's say, HBOs feature-length programming (and garner Turner an Emmy nomination and/or award). This isnt a disparagement of the film, but there is a certain expectation a moviegoer has when they venture out of their homes to pay to see a movie. Whether it has to do with the subject matter, language, violence, sex, etc, one imagines theyll experience a story that isnt available in the television medium. However, as technology and media change and the lines begin to blur, it becomes more challenging to decipher what makes a motion picture verses a TV-movie. And does it matter? Watching the variety of emotions which cross Turners face seem to make it a moot point.
