The Breeders' Cup ran its first race in 1984 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood

, Calif. It is held at a different racetrack each year and usually is one of the most well-attended events in sports. The races are spread over two days, with a total of 14 Championship races. The races are non-invitational, and the top 14 horses for each race are selected according to Challenge Race performance, a point system and expert opinion.

The reigning winner of the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic is foal Zenyatta, who became the first female to win the race and the first horse ever to win two Breeders' Cup races (she had won the Ladies' Classic the year before).

Breeders' Cup Final Schedule, Wagering for Championships

Breeders' Cup announced the official race order for the 27th Breeders' Cup World Championships, to be held November 5-6 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

The positions of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G2) and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1) were switched on the Friday program and the Breeders' Cup Sprint (G1) and the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) were transposed on the Saturday program from the tentative order announced in September.

"The anticipated field for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf came up very strong with eight Grade/Group 1 winners from the UK, France, Japan, Canada and the U.S. It deserves top billing with the Ladies' Classic (G1)," explained Ken Kirchner of FalKirk International, who directs the wagering product for Breeders' Cup. "The Dirt Mile is also a very deep, high-quality field with eight graded stakes winners. This change also makes a good grouping of the two sprints and the two juvenile races in the early $1 million guaranteed Pick 4 and a grouping of the Classic (G1), Turf (G1) and two mile races in the $1.5 million guaranteed late Pick 4."

Championship Friday will be a 10-race program, beginning at 2 p.m. (EDT) with two Churchill Downs allowance races followed by two stakes events, including the Ack Ack H. (G3). The six Breeders' Cup contests will start in the 5TH race at 4:10 p.m. with the Marathon (G3). ESPN2 will provide coverage from 4-8 p.m. on Friday's program.

The Breeders' Cup Pick 6 on Friday will be comprised of the six Championships races and have a guaranteed gross pool of $750,000.

Championship Saturday features eight Breeders' Cup races on an 11-race card starting at 12:05 p.m. with a Churchill allowance and two stakes races, including the Chilukki S. (G2). ABC will cover the races from 1:30-3:30 p.m., then ESPN will take over for the remainder of the Breeders' Cup card from 3:30-7 p.m.

Post time for the Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) will be 6:45 p.m.

The Ultra Pick 6 on Saturday will carry a $2 million guaranteed gross pool and be comprised of the Turf Sprint (G2), Juvenile (G1), Mile (G1), Dirt Mile, Turf and Classic races.
