Want to Search for Pirate's Treasure? Try Looking Away from the Beach

Believe it or not -- there is still plenty of pirates' treasure out there just waiting to be discovered.

And plenty of other kinds, too.

Treasure is everywhere! You just need to know where to look. (Well...Okay. Not really "everywhere." If it were, it really wouldn't be treasure. Would it?)

But you need to forget grabbing your metal detector and heading for the beach. That's what all the geeks do. If any treasure ever was buried on a beach it's been found already. Besides -- nobody buries anything important on a beach. Have you ever tried to dig a hole on a beach? What happens? Right.

Try Looking in an Unusual Place for Some Pirate's Treasure

As I said, avoid the beaches. In fact, the whole Caribbean is pretty much played out.

So how about New Jersey? Yes, the Garden State.

This then-colony was one of the last places visited by the infamous Captain Kidd before he was captured in 1700. The pirate-turned-privateer was transported to England where he was hanged for his crimes. But to the end he claimed he had buried a fortune and would trade the location for his life.

A cache of gold worth at least $2.4 million in today's value had already been found just a few months after his arrest and many believe that this was the "fortune" Kidd was referring to.

But Kidd claimed that another $7.2 million in gold was still waiting for him and his savior in a secret spot. If he wasn't lying just to save his neck -- then it is still out there somewhere.

Raritan Bay, New Jersey seems like the most likely spot if the treasure does exist. Kidd is known to have anchored here and gold coins from the 17th century have been found in two separate spots around the bay.

Also noteworthy is that two of Kidd's former crewmen -- "reformed" -- retire to spot nearby and reportedly lived very well into their old age.
