Visit Vank Cathedral in Isfahan When You Travel to Iran

Vank Cathedral is a beautifully structured church located in the Jolfa district of Isfahan. It was constructed by the Armenian immigrants who came to Iran between 1603 and 1605 after the Ottoman war. When you travel to Iran, you will see this area near the Zayandeh river which has a mix of cultures arising from the settling down of mercenaries, European missionaries and travelers here. If you look at the cathedral closely, you can see the varying building styles manifested in the architecture of this structure. The Armenian people entered Iran during the reign of Shah Abbas I.

Description of the Cathedral

Work on Vank Cathedral began in 1606. But the major workmanship was done under the able guidance of Archbishop David in the period 1655-1664. In fact, the design of the cathedral is much along the lines of a Persian mosque with a spectacular domed sanctuary.

The major difference in this structure is the semi-octagonal apse with a raised chancel which you can see in the churches in Europe. The entrance is decorated with a tiled plaque which has many inscriptions in the Armenian language. There is a huge courtyard near the cathedral which has a freestanding belfry. You will find several Protestant and Orthodox Christians buried beneath this bell tower when you travel to Iran.

The Interior Decoration

Although the interiors of Vank Cathedral are decorated intricately, yet the exteriors are very plain in sharp contrast. You can find many gilded carvings and paintings on a handsomely tiled background. The Bible's depiction of the creation of the world has been brought to life in the gold and blue paintings in the central dome.

There is also a printing press, a museum and a library inside which is a rich source of information about ancient European and Armenian languages and arts. You will be privileged to see the first printed book in Iran, along with 700 handwritten books here.

Objects of Interest

There are also many objects belonging to the Armenians in Vank Cathedral. When you travel to Iran, you can see tapestries, paintings, embroidery and costumes of the Armenians in the museum. Parts of the Bible have also been depicted in the carvings on the stones outside. Other Orthodox churches in Iran have been inspired by this cathedral.
