Visit Chogha Zanbil Temple During Your Travel To Iran

Visit Chogha Zanbil, an Elamite temple, when you travel to Iran and you will get to see the most renowned ziggurat existing today in the world

. It was the first site in Iran to be considered a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Although it was Mesopotamia which was well known for its ziggurats, this site is an exception and you will be surprised to see the structure still standing tall even after three thousand years after it was built.

Most of the ancient ziggurats found place in Mesopotamia and were built by the Assyrians, Babylonians and the Sumerians. Chogha Zanbil is also one of the thirty famous ziggurats which were built during this time and is the largest one existing today.

The Purpose of Ziggurats

Traditionally, a ziggurat was considered to be an abode of the Gods. No customary rituals were carried out on a daily basis and neither did the priests live here like they do in temples. These structures were mainly built close to big cities so that the Gods could keep an eye on the people and help them in their moments of despair. They would ensure that the kings won the battles against their enemies and that the agriculture was well looked after.

These structures were more like the pyramids having several stories in them. Only the priest and the king were allowed to the topmost story where all the offerings were made at a shrine, which you can see when you visit Chogha Zanbil.

Beautiful Structure

If you are really fascinated by ziggurats and want to see the architecture of the structure, then Chogha Zanbil is the best example in front of you. You cannot miss it when you travel to Iran. Research points to the site being constructed by the king Untash Napirisha around 1250 BC.

Inshushinak, a famous Elamite God, was supposed to rest here. He was also called the Lord of Susa, and was greatly revered by the people for his benevolence. The temple dedicated to this God was located in Susa. You will get an opportunity to find out about the history of the place when you visit Chogha Zanbil.

Grand Monument

Untash Napirisha wanted to create a new religious hub in Chogha Zanbil which is apparent when you hear about his grand project to have about twenty-two temples in the complex. There are many inscriptions on the structure which you can see when you visit Chogha Zanbil. It is a well-preserved monument.
