Offering one of the best environments for swimming and sun-bathing, the beach is most famous for the beautiful sunset views it provides. An important pilgrimage center for the Hindus, the secluded beach is also called as the Papnasam beach. As per popular Hindu belief, bathing in the holy waters of the Varkala beach has the potential to cleanse the body and soul.

Other than the main beach area, visitors can also explore popular attractions in the nearby region. This includes mineral water springs famous for its medicinal abilities, a visit to the Sree Janardhan Swamy temple and the Nature center. A variety of other smaller beaches are also seen at Varkala on moving further north. They mostly have black volcanic sand. Coconut shells, conch shells and beads are among the many decorative items that can be picked up from shops lining this beach.

When at the beach, you can explore the Anjengo Fort which is a 17th century structure crafted by the Ducth. Another well-known attraction is the Varkala Tunnel which is a 924 ft long tunnel that came into existence in 1867. What's more, you can always drop by the Varkala Lighthouse, which is believed to be another tourist attraction in the area. Finally, a cruise boat will allow you to station yourself in the beautiful Ponnumthurut Island that houses a Shiva-Parvati Temple.

Activities to indulge in when holidaying at this beach are beneficial Ayurvedic treatments, meditation and Yoga. The adventurous bunch can anticipate enjoying water sports like wind surfing, parasailing and scuba diving. The brown sand covering this beach is surrounded by a picturesque landscape that should complete the ideal beach vacation of a regular tourist. The attraction of this beach is the astounding sunset it offers across the Arabian sea.
