Using Left Handed Scissors - Tips for Crafting With Your Kids

When you're planning the next craft session, of course you want it to be the best time for yourself and family, and having all the necessary equipment ready will contribute to your success. But sure, sometimes it's tough getting everything just right. After you've made sure that everybody has the right materials (including left handed scissors for the lefties and right handed scissors for the righties); how can you make a fun time more likely? OK... what we're going to do is give you some actionable advice to ensure everyone has a terrific time with your craft projects.

Wherever you'll be crafting, you need to take measures to avoid any damage. You can spread-out old newspapers or an old sheet on the floor to protect it, and also do the same if you'll be working on a table. That will also shave some time off when you're cleaning up afterwards. Simple steps are also great for keeping things from getting 'lost' such as your kids' left-handed scissors, as an example. If everyone stays in the protected work space, then that will make your job a bit easier. There are time savings involved, and that is what it's all about; a little here, and a little there.

Attempt to make plans early. Take time to read the craft instructions and know what you can prepare early. Some crafts are going to be harder for some kids. Left handed kids have a particularly hard time with crafts that involve lots of cutting because they need special left handed scissors to be able to do that part of the project and, at the rate things get lost in most homes, it is rare that there are correct sized left handed scissors in place. If you struggle with this, choose crafts that involve more folding and building than cutting.

It's really important to have your kids work on crafts that are appropriate to their ages. The reason for this is simply to avoid causing your kids to feel they can't do it, and that won't be good for their sense of confidence, etc. Always avoid something that is significantly advanced for their age because that can be potentially damaging to them. The other end of the spectrum is allowing them to become bored because the craft is too easy. Some children may be inclined to feel a little bit 'dissed' because it's easy, and they could even think you believe they are not capable, or smart. Doing crafts with your kids will cause you stress and not them. Children basically like to be creative and "make stuff." But that is how it should be; it's part of being the parent to stress and worry over making things the best they can be for our children. But if possible, do try to be relaxed once everything is underway. Don't forget those left-handed scissors, and don't forget to have fun and love your kids.
