PNR stands for Passenger Name Record, which means that each passengers ticket has

By land phone: The passengers can dial the enquiry number (139) and enter the 10-digit PNR, when the voicemail asks them to do so. They will get an automated reply of the present status instantly. For the convenience of the passengers, this number has the enquiry option in both Hindi and English.
Via SMS: From the mobile phone of the passengers, they have to send an SMS to 58888 in this particular format- PNR and send the same to the enquiry number. They will get the response after some time, normally within 20 minutes to half an hour.
BSNL mobile users: All mobile users of BSNL have a travel and railway option on their mobile phones. They have to select the PNR option, enter their unique number and press . They will get the status of their ticket in no time at all.
