?

Incontinence has always been considered primarily a woman's condition because more women than men suffer from it. With age, urinary incontinence in women becomes even more common for a variety of reasons but chiefly because of the trauma that women go through with childbirth.

Giving birth, particularly multiple times can stretch and even tear the muscles of the pelvic floor. Theses muscles are essential in keeping the organs in the abdomen in their proper place and if they are weakened those organs can shift causing additional pressure on the bladder which may result in difficulty controlling urination.

You might think if a woman's body goes through that kind of stress that incontinence would occur immediately after birth but that is usually not the case. As the women ages, and as the muscles weaken, the damage done by birth suddenly becomes more important and incontinence may happen.

Hormones are another reason that women are more susceptible to the condition as they get older. Estrogen is important in keeping the connective tissue in muscle healthy. As women age the levels of Estrogen produced decreases until after menopause when it stops all together. Weakend tissue means less urinary control.

Exercise is another contributor. As we age we are less likely to participate in physical activity and that also contributes to weakened muscles. Doing an exercise regimen like Kegel exercises can strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor even without the presence of estrogen. Stronger muscles mean more control of urine flow.

While there appear to be a lot of natural factors, including the pull of gravity, that are making women urinary incontinence in women a seemingly inevitable event it doesn't have to be. Exercise, diet and in some cases medication can control and even cure the condition. See your doctor if you are experiencing incontinence for the best therapy.
