Unfortunately, the time to decide whether you are happy with your insurance company is before you have to make a claim

Know your policy

If you purchased your insurance coverage from an agent, he or she should have gone over your policy with you. However, policies are long and the terms used are not often easy to understand for the layperson. That said it is important for you to know what your policy says because it is a contract between you and the insurance policy. The policy dictates what is covered and what isn't and what the terms and conditions of that coverage are. If you haven't read your policy (which is something that insurance companies count on) then you won't know what your insurance company has promised you in exchange for the monthly premium you pay.

Research the applicable law

There are certain conditions and guidelines that every insurance policy sold must meet. While most insurance policies do meet the guidelines, some adjusters, on the orders of their higher-ups, will try and get away with something that goes against not only the policy but also the law. If you know the laws in your area, you can catch them if they attempt to do this with you. Once they know that you're aware of the laws, they will be less likely to try and cheat you out of your just due.

Get it in writing

Whenever you receive a promise from your insurance company to do anything, from paying the contractors who do the repair work to putting you up in a hotel room while your home is being worked on, you should request that the adjuster mail you a letter confirming the terms and details of the promise. However, a verbal request is not good enough. Send the insurance company a letter in which you repeat the terms of the promise and request a confirmation by mail. That way, the insurance company will have a more difficult time in reneging on offers made.

Stay in regular contact

How often the insurance company must provide you with the status of an open claim is often regulated by law. In most cases, whenever you contact the insurance company, especially in writing, the insurance company must return the contact with the requested information. Use this fact to your advantage and make the insurance adjuster tell you what is happening with your claim. If the adjuster does not follow through, you may make a complaint to the regulating body in charge of insurance companies.

Hiring the services of a loss assessor is another way you can make sure that you are getting all of the coverage that you are owed from your insurance company. Loss assessors work for you and they know the applicable laws so you don't have to do all of the necessary research to keep on top of the insurance company.
