Understanding the Hunter Gatherer Diet

Do you want to live like a caveman or cavewoman? Well, I'm not going to show you how to do that. But I will show you how you can eat like one.

Do you want to be stronger, faster, and chisel out a body like Angelina Jolie or Megan Fox? What about Kelly Rowan, Uma Thurman or Carol Alt? These are some of the celebrities who have gotten the bodies of their dreams by following this diet and eating like cavewomen.

The Hunter Gatherer Diet, which is also called the Paleo Diet, or the Caveman Diet, is a diet plan that tries to mimic what our human ancestors ate.

So, how is the Hunter Gatherer Diet different than other diet plans?

The premise of the Hunter Gatherer Diet is to eliminate things from our diet that our bodies are not genetically coded to digest properly.

It's simple, really. Our DNA has only changed 0.005 percent from the DNA of cavemen who are over 2 million years old.

In other words, our bodies are designed to eat what cavemen ate. It's not designed to eat the latest laboratory creation by Frito Lay or General Mills.

Generally speaking, if you can't pick it from a tree, bush, or out of the ground, and if you can't hunt it with a spear; you shouldn't be putting it in your body.

There are a few rules when following a Paleolithic diet:

1. Eliminate the Grains

The first principle of following the Hunter Gatherer Diet is to eliminate all grains and refined carbohydrates from your meals. This includes all forms of bread, corn, rice barley, and even starchy tubers like white potatoes.

This is probably the hardest aspect of the diet for most people to follow.

The premise is that our bodies have been adapting to eating whole, raw foods for over 2 million years -- whereas we have only been farming for approximately 12,000 years. Our bodies are just not physically suited for -- and have not adapted to -- ingesting the products of agriculture.

If weight loss is your goal, you should eliminate refined carbohydrates no matter which diet you follow. When you consume carbohydrates, your body converts them to glucose (a sugar). A tiny bit of this glucose is then further converted to glycogen which is stored as fuel for your muscles.

Your body can't use the amount of glucose you get from consuming these high carbohydrate foods and the rest of this glucose is stored as body fat. To lose body fat, you need cut down on the carbohydrates.

Since the Paleo diet restricts refined carbohydrates, it's already makes itself out to be a great diet for rapid fat loss.

2. No Added Sugar with Meals

The second rule while following a Paleolithic lifestyle is that you need to eliminate any added sugars from your meals. Added sugars include things like table sugar (sucrose), High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), processed honey, and chemical artificial sweeteners (Splenda, Sweet-N-Low, Equal).

The Paleo Diet is a great diet for diabetics and pre-diabetics because of the restricted amount of sugars. When consuming less sugar, your body dumps less insulin into your bloodstream and you become less resistant to it (diabetic).

3. No Dairy Products

Many people who follow the Hunter Gather Diet eliminate or severely restrict their intake of dairy products. You probably already know that dairy is hard to digest and absorb by many people -- ever heard of Lactose Intolerance? Milk allergies? Exactly.

Paleolithic diet philosophy dictates that the prevalence of these ailments is because the human body has not adapted for properly handling dairy. After all, cow's milk was meant for calves -- not humans.

4. No Legumes

The legume family contains soy products, beans, peanuts, peas, lentils, among others.

Cavemen wouldn't have ate very many legumes because of the extreme measures in which they must be prepared for proper digestion.

Legumes (and grains) contain high amounts of lectins. Lectins are a plant's defensive mechanism. It has been compared to a low-grade poison to keep other things (like us) from eating them. Your body's digestive enzymes only do about half the job in breaking these lectins down.

Lectins are known to cause what is known as leaky gut syndrome. After the lectins have wrought enough havoc in your intestines, your intestinal wall may breach causing the contents of your intestines to leak into your bloodstream.

This has been known to cause diseases such as Celiac disease, arthritis, IBS, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, and Crohn's disease, among others.
