Understanding Utah Car Insurance

To better understand auto insurance coverages

, we will break it down into two sections. The first section of coverages apply to the policy as a whole, and the second section of coverages apply to

each auto seperatly. Lets break down some of these standard coverages in the first portion, and go a little more into detail about them. We will go over the second portion of auto insurance coverages next week.

Bodily Injury: This is the most common coverage on an auto insurance policy. There are many options when it comes to this coverage, most companies offer Utah state minimums which are 25/65 or even as high as 500/500 (When there are two numbers like this, it is called split limits). These numbers stand for the thousands (25,000/65,000, 50,000/100,000, and so on.) and represent the amount that the insurance companies will award for the insureds liability to the other party. The first amount listed is the maximum amount that they will pay per individual and the second amount listed is the maximum amount they will pay per occurrence.

Property Damage: This coverage is the most that the insurance company will award for other peoples property that you are held liable to replace. Most companies offer 25,000, 50,000, 100,000, or 250,000 and that is the most they will pay out per incident.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This coverage helps pay for medical expenses for you and all the passengers in your car, in the event of an occurrence, wether its your fault or not. Most companies will pay a maximum of $3,000, $5,000, $10,000, and some companies even go up to $25,000 per incident but not more than 80% of medical costs, depending on what you get on your policy.

Underinsured Motorist: This coverage has the same limit options as bodily injury and is to protect you from people that injure you and dont have sufficient bodily injury limits to cover your injuries.

Uninsured Motorist: This is the same as underinsured motorist but protects you from people that dont have insurance at all, and has the same limit options as bodily injury.
