Understanding Child Obesity

Obesity in America has unfortunately been on the rise for many years and this includes child obesity as well

. Child obesity is a very serious medical condition that can lead to even more serious adult medical problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. If that isn't bad enough, many obese children also suffer from low self-esteem and depression and are at a higher risk to develop an eating disorder. The only way to truly overcome obesity is to understand it.

Simply looking at your child is not the proper way to determine if your child is overweight. Some children have naturally larger body frames. Also, children will carry different amounts of weight during the stages of adolescence -sometimes it really is just "baby fat." Doctors can determine your child's BMI (body mass index) which will tell you the proper weight for your child's age and height. Always consult with your doctor and do not try to do this at home. If your BMI is in the 85-94th percentile, you are overweight. If it is above the 95th percentile, that is obesity. A doctor will also factor in body frame and how muscular a child is to determine if his weight is a problem.

Although child obesity can be caused by genetics or a hormonal disorder, most of the time it is because children are not eating properly and exercising. Diets high in calories along with soda, candy, and other foods loaded with sugar can quickly lead to obesity. Inactivity is also a major contribution. An overweight family can also increase a child's chances because high-calorie food is readily available and exercise is not encouraged. Psychological and socioeconomic factors can also play a major role. A depressed child might find comfort in eating. Poor families may not be able to afford healthy food which can put a child at risk.

The treatment for most children is the same: diet and exercise. When grocery shopping, parents have to stop buying snacks, soda, and other food loaded with calories. Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Always eat dinner together as a family and discourage eating in front of the TV or computer screen. Doing so can limit your awareness of how much you have eaten. Try to limit the amount of times you eat out.

Eating properly is only half the battle though. Exercise can quickly burn calories and develop muscle growth and build strong bones. Exercise will also help your child sleep better and be more alert during the day. Limit the amount of time spent watching television, playing video games, going on the computer, and other lethargic activities. Staying fit doesn't mean your kid needs a rigorous exercise routine. Simple games like hide-and-seek or tag will burn calories. Vary his activities so he remains interested and participate with him. If a parent is active, the child will be too. Medication and surgery are seen as last resorts when diet and exercise are not helping.

Child obesity is hard for both the child and the parents. Always remain encouraging and focus your child on positive goals. Praise his efforts and be sensitive to his needs and feelings. With a positive attitude, your child can overcome child obesity.
