Christmas marks a season of giving and, in recent years

, cash and gift cards have gained in popularity. While cash has historically not been seen as the first gift of choice, the increasingly complex purchasing habits and likes of people in every age group has made cash and the gift card a viable option whose popularity only continues to grow. Christmas cards have also become a common way for people to give gifts in the form of cash and gift cards. Yet the questions remain, which is best and which is most appropriate?

Let's face it, there is no doubt that it is hard to argue with cash. It's good virtually everywhere and the person receiving the gift is free to do with the cash whatever he or she sees fit. There is also a degree of excitement that comes from opening a Christmas card only to discover that there is a gift hiding within. People love this rush. As a result, they open Christmas cards with at least some of this expectation. For this reason, the gift of cash is always a welcomed addition.

On the other side of the equation is the gift card. Gift cards have become wildly popular. You might have noticed that retailers make sure that gift cards are always on hand as impulse items at the check out counter and with good reason. As it turns out, a large percentage of gift cards are never redeemed. This, of course, makes millions for the corporations that issue the cards. Millions of dollars without having to provide any goods or services certainly sounds like any businesspersons dream come true!

There are additional issues that one should be aware of when considering a gift card. They have expiration dates. Unfortunately, a gift card is not good forever, and how long a given card lasts is essentially dependent upon the store that is issuing the card. If you are trying to decide between a gift card and cash, it is good to keep in mind that cash is forever and gift cards are temporary. Those opting for gifts to include in their Christmas cards come this holiday season should know how long the gift card will last, and remind the recipient of how long they have to redeem the card. In this way, you will get what you paid for and the person receiving the gift card will actually receive a gift just as you intended.
