1. Flat race: This is a race where there are no obstacles in the way of racing.
2. Hurdle: In this type of race, the horses are required to jump over a number of hurdles of a particular height. The horses have to cross the hurdles by jumping over them. There are weight considerations for this event. Most of these races are held in Victoria and South Australia.
3. Steeplechase: This is also a type of the hurdle race, the difference being that the height of the barrier is more than the one in hurdle race and even the distance run is more than the one in hurdle race.
4. Maiden races: This is a type of restricted race in which only those horses are allowed that have never won in a flat race at a registered meeting or any other advertised race in the Australia. The maiden Australian horse racing can be done for flat as well as hurdle races.
5. Class races: There are six types of class horse races which are there in Australia. These are labeled as class 1 to class 6 races. Class 1 races are restricted to those horses which have not won more than one race, class 2 for those who have not won more than 2 and so on, Class 6 race is restricted to those horses who have not won more than 6. Maidens, since they have not won any, can compete from class 1 to 6 races.
Besides these race types, the classification is also done on the basis of the breed of the horses. In Australia, most of the horse racing is the thoroughbred while the standardbred racing is also done. Then, racing can also be pari-mutuel or harness or handicap racing. Australia-wide there are different types of racing tracks laid out.

1. Grass or turf tracks: These are the ones which have some grass over them. These range from absolute dry ones to varying degrees of moisture. The more the moisture the slower is the run of the horse.
2. Sand and Dirt surface: This is another common type of race track to be found. Different levels of moisture and the dirt conditions can give different types of these tracks.
