Types Of Discipline For Children

Types Of Discipline For Children

While every child and type of parenting style is different

, all of them include some principle of discipline for children. Government agencies, parenting experts, and behavior gurus may all have their ideas of which discipline may work best, but you are the only one who can determine what works for your child and family.

Understanding the different discipline techniques and what each type entails will give you a better idea of what will work best. Rules may change depending on the age and ability of a child, but consistent expectations of behaviors should always be reinforced.

Praise // Positive discipline: Positive discipline or PD is a discipline system that focuses on reinforcing positive behaviors. PDs philosophy is that there are no bad children, just good and bad behavior; good behavior is facilitated through praise and rewards.

Time out: A time out is a consequence as a result of an unwanted behavior. By removing a child from a situation for a short amount of time, it allows the child to calm down and start fresh at the end of the time out. This discipline works best for children capable of understanding why the time out is taking place.

Loss of privileges: This form of discipline is most effective with older children. If the opportunity exists, deny the child privileges or highly preferred activities related to the misbehavior. For example, if a child is asked to stop playing video games but does not, the video games are taken away.

Physical discipline: corporal discipline is widely debated among parents, but when used appropriately, it can be very effective. Providing immediate feedback such as slapping a childs hand due to an unacceptable behavior can reduce negative conduct.

Neglect: Some people feel that the best way to discipline a childs negative behavior is to simply ignore it. Though this discipline may be effective on the small scale, it is vital to give your child attention to ensure that he or she grows and prospers to function as a member of society.
