Two of the Most Popular Misconceptions About Work From Home Businesses

I have been searching for a home-based-business the majority of my adult life. I have tried the Pyramid, the Get-Rich-Quick, and the Multi-Level Marketing schemes as a way to leave corporate America behind and work on my terms. But, I often-times ran into the same two frustrations over and over again: the time that is required to start a home-based-business and the amount of time that elapses before I see results. I wanted to write an article to people out there looking to start a home-based-business and give them a caveat of sorts.

The first frustration, and usually the one that undermines the starting your own business process, is the amount of time that is required to start your home-based-business. Many people are under the misconception that to start a home-based-business, all you have to do are a few simple steps:

Go to a website

Pay your money

Watch the riches roll in

My dear friends, those steps will NOT lead to a successful business. If you want to start up your home-based-business here are some factors that will require time from you if you want your business to head in the right direction:

Training - Many home-based-business websites offer training for you to start your business. This may take anywhere from 10-20 hours depending on if the training is textual or in video format.

Creating accounts - The home-based-businesses I have tried require you to spend time signing up for various accounts. Examples of these might be: email accounts, site accounts (auction sites, classified ads sites, PayPal, etc), or other sites that may offer a service you will need for your training. While signing up for an email account may only take a few minutes, if you have to do that 20-30 times, you can see where a few hours may be required to finish this step.

Making contacts - Depending on the type of home-based business you want to begin, you may have to contact individuals or companies via email to start working for them. The amount of time this takes is dependent on how many emails you must send out in order to get started.

Data creation - If you will be using scripts in your home-based-business, you will do a great deal of typing before your business even starts. The wonderful things about scripts is that once you create them, you can copy/paste them for future use. However, in order to get to the "copy/paste phase," you may put a large amount of time into your business before you make your first penny.

As you can see, it is not unreasonable to think you may spend 30 hours or so with your home-based-business before it is up and running. I want you to understand this and not to be under the misconception that you can go to a website, pay a fee, and your business is up and running in an hour, and suddenly you are making money hand-over-fist. Many people get frustrated with the amount of time it takes to start up a business and eventually, they quit because they did not allow for the time necessary to get their business under way.

Once your business is going, you cannot just leave it alone and hope it keeps making money for you. You must put in the time and effort to oversee the day-to-day operations of your business (replying to emails from potential customers, checking hits from websites, and checking your earnings, etc).

There is an old saying, "Rome was not built in a day." This saying rings true for people starting a work from home business. Patience is required to see results. No business would survive if the people who opened it threw up their hands and said, "I give up" after being open for only a few days.

This is another common misconception about home-based-businesses.

A home-based-business requires your patience and persistence for the business to grow and, as a result, earn you money. People who say, "well, I have purchased the package, I sent a few emails, and now I am going to sit back and watch the money roll in" are doomed to fail. If you start your business and expect to see thousands of dollars coming in after only a few days. you will be disappointed. Your home-based-business, just like any retail or customer-driven business, takes time to grow and to be profitable.

I hope this article has helped anyone hoping to go into a work from home business. Especially, anyone starting their own business for the first time. Remember, just because you purchase a package or download some software, that doesn't mean you can walk up to your boss the next day and tell your boss, "I quit." I want your business to be successful just as much as I want my business to be successful. If you can avoid the two pitfalls I have discussed in this article, your business is off to a great start!
