Two-day Tours in Chungcheongbuk-do Province

Located in the central region of the Korean Peninsula, Chungcheongbuk-do (also called North Chungcheong Province' or Chungbuk') is the only province in Korea not bordered by the sea. Known as the center of mountain tourism in Korea, this region is home to three national parks (spanning Sobaeksan, Woraksan, and Songnisan Mountains), Namhangang River, and Chungjuho and Daecheongho Lakes. In addition to its natural beauty (and varied outdoor activities), the area is home to many old temples like Beopjusa and Guinsa, which reflect the Buddhist roots of this important province. The province is also the final resting place of Jikji, the first book ever to be produced using metal-plate printing. It is the unique combination of historical landmarks and pristine natural beauty that makes Chungcheongbuk-do a region well worth visiting.

1. Two-day Tour in Danyang and Chungjuho Lake area

Day 1Two-day Tours in Chungcheongbuk-do Province

Gosu Cave->Cheondong Cave->Darian Valley->Daemyung Resort Aqua World Danyang

The Danyang area is famous for its valleys and caves. From Danyang Intercity Bus Terminal, cross Gosu Bridge and walk approximately 700 meters straight to Mount Sobaeksan. There, you will find the entrance to Gosu Cave, a limestone cave 1,700 meters long.

After exploring Gosu Cave, take a bus bound for Cheondong Cave and Darian Valley. Located about 4.32 kilometers from Gosu Cave, is Cheondong, a cave approximately 470 meters long. From the cave, you'll see an asphalt road and hiking path leading up to the Cheondong Trail in Mount Sobaeksan and Darian Valley.

Darian is a mountain valley that runs with the clear waters of Mount Sobaeksan. Take some time to breathe in the fresh air of the mountain valley before taking the bus for Danyang and Aqua World Danyang within the Daemyung Resort. Once reaching the Aqua World, spend the rest of the day soaking in the hot baths and pools that are fed by carbonated water pumped up from 750 meters underground.

Day 2

Janghoenaru Wharf ->Chungjuho Lake Ferries->Oksun Bridge->Jeongbangsa Temple->Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Park

Take the Chungjuho Lake ferry at Janghoenaru Wharf. While on the ferry, you'll see Gudambong Peak(330m) and Oksunbong Peak(283 m), which are among the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, as well as the peaks of Mount Geumsusan (1,015m) rising up in the distance. The ferry will loop around in front of the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Park and return to Janghoenaru (total travel time: one hour).

Once off the ferry, take a taxi for Oksun Bridge. The taxi will take you along a winding riverside road to the Oksun Bridge. From the bus stop near the observatory on the bridge, take the bus for Jeongbangsa Temple. The bus stop for the temple and the actual temple site are quite a distance away from each other, so make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes. The breathtaking view of Chungjuho Lake and Mount Woraksan from the temple makes the hike all worthwhile, so don't quit too soon! The final stop on your destination is the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Park. Here, you will find the filming location of the drama Daemang (The Great Ambition) and the Cheongpung Hyanggyo Confucian School.

2. Two-day Tour in Mount Songnisan area and Boeun

Day 1

Hwayanggugok(Hwayangdong Valley) ->Seonyugugok(Seonyudong Valley)

Hwayangdong Valley is one of nature's finest masterpieces, full of thick groves of trees, clean, clear water, and big, flat stones. The valley's abundance of water and soft, sand-covered streambeds make it the ideal place to swim and play in the water. The hiking trail up Mount Domyeongsan along the valley takes about three hours, but it's a relatively easy climb that's perfect for visitors of all ages.

At the entrance of the valley is the Hwayangdong auto camping site. Although perhaps not the most luxurious accommodation, the camping site gives visitors easy access to Hwayangdong Valley and gently-sloping Seonyudong Valley, only 7 kilometers away.

Day 2

Samnyeonsanseong Fortress ->Songnisan Maltijae Recreational Forest->House of Seon Byeong-guk

Located in Boeun-eup, Samnyeonsanseong is a well-preserved fortress 1.7 kilometers in circumference and 13 meters in height. From the top of the fortress you'll catch a fantastic view of Boeun; the view is particularly popular among tourists and photographers.

From the fortress, take a bus bound for the Songnisan Maltijae Recreation Forest. The recreational forest (featuring the Jangjae Reservoir) includes walking and hiking trails, water playgrounds, and outdoor cooking areas. After the Forest, your next destination will be the House of Seon Byeong-guk, an old representative Korean residence consisting of anchae (women's quarters), sarangchae (men's quarters), sadang (family shrine) in its main building, and daemunchae and haengnangchae (servants' quarters) in the annex. The residence offers accommodations and traditional cultural hands-on programs and is a perfect example of traditional hanok architecture.

3. Two-day Tour in Daecheongho Lake area and Cheongju

Day 1

Daecheong Dam Water Culture Center (Daecheong Dam) ->Munui Cultural Properties Site->Cheongnamdae Presidential Villa-> Stay in Cheongju-si

In size and beauty, Daecheongho Lake is counted among the Three Major Lakes of Korea along with Soyangho and Yongdamho. Visit the Daecheong Dam Water Culture Center at the lake for a view of the 80 kilometer-long Daecheong Dam and to learn about the aquatic life of Daecheongho Lake. The center also provides information about the culture and lives of those who once inhabited the lakeside area.

Take a taxi to The Munui Cultural Property Complex, a cluster of traditional cultural assets featuring traditional hanok houses, old villages, and streets. A special feature of this particular area is the straw yeomak,' a hut where the bereaved went to mourn for their parents for three years after their parents' passing. The yeomak embodies the traditional funeral culture of Korea and underscores the deep respect Koreans have for their elders.

From the complex, the ticket office for Cheongnamdae is just five minutes away on foot. From the ticket office, take a shuttle bus for Cheongnamdae. From 1983-2003 Cheongnamdae served as the vacation destination of the presidents of Korea. Ever since the summer home opened to the public in 2003, it has attracted a large number of tourists from across the nation. In the main building, visitors will even find furniture and household items used by former presidents.

Day 2Two-day Tours in Chungcheongbuk-do Province

Sangdangsanseong Fortress->Cheongju National Museum->Cheongju Early Printing Museum->Beopjusa Temple

On your second day, head first to Sangdangsanseong, a fortress dating back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910). The way up to the fortress is rather grueling, but you will be rewarded with a scenic view of Cheongju upon reaching the top. Sangdangsanseong is a popular filming location for Korean historical movies and dramas; scenes of the drama Taewangsasingi' were filmed at the South Gate of Sangdangsanseong.

Stop in at the Cheongju National Museum, the Cheongju Zoo, or the Onggi Museum on your way to Cheongju. Cheongju was the border of The Three Kingdoms (Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla) from the 4th century to the mid-7th century and was a cultural crossroads between the peoples. Most notably, Jikji, the world's oldest movable metal print book and a UNESCO Memory of the World, was produced in Heungdeoksa Temple, the remains of which can still be found in the area. The use of movable metal blocks for printing was an epochal event in world history. To learn about its history, make sure to visit the Early Printing Museum.

Next, take the bus to Beopjusa Temple. The temple, which is 1,500 years old, is home to Palsangjeon, a five-story wooden stupa, and a number of stone lanterns including the Twin Lions Lantern. There are also a huge cauldron (270 meters in diameter) and the bronze Mireukdaebul Statue measuring 33 meters high. The temple offers many other things to see, so don't forget to stop at this important historical monument during your stay in Chungcheongbuk-do.
