Twitter is traditional list building in the 21st Century. Done correctly, a single "tweet" can drive hundreds of targeted traffic to your business website, all of whom feel as if they already know and trust you. You will, in essence build an online following that you can take to the bank. Done incorrectly, Twitter is not only a waste of your valuable time but could actually damage your reputation and image.

No matter what you might think about it, Twitter is one of the best things to happen to the online marketing world. When it was first introduced, many marketers dismissed it as a fad, a huge waste of time, or both. That's great, say the Twitter experts who can drive hundreds or more targeted visitors through any link they want with a single tweet.

You see, growing your number of followers on Twitter is similar in many ways to traditional list building. For normal list building, you're expected to provide something of value in return for the prospect's name and email address. On Twitter, people will generally add themselves to your follower list (a.k.a. follow you) if they like you and the information that you provide them. With a normal list, bombarding your subscribers with sales pitches will result in many people unsubscribing. On Twitter, repeated blasting of nothing but affiliate links will cause many people to "unfollow" you.

The number one thing to keep in mind when using Twitter is to treat the site like what it is: a social networking site. There is no "marketing" in "social networking", so don't expect people to automatically be interested in buying your stuff.

The best way to make money with Twitter is to build strong relationships and to provide great value to your followers. It is an unspoken truth that every Internet marketer who uses Twitter wants to make money from it, but the proper way to do it is to not appear as a marketer, but as a trusted friend and/or advisor. And that's my second tip - to provide value to your followers and to not appear as a marketer.

I mentioned providing value, but value can also come in the form of a good recommendation for a product. True, you shouldn't shove affiliate links down your followers' throats. However, you can easily get away with it if you've developed a strong relationship with your followers.

The key to developing a strong relationship with your followers is to tweet every day. In fact, you should tweet many times per day. The big difference between email marketing and Twitter marketing is that while people usually get annoyed if you email them more than once or twice per day, you can tweet to your heart's delight and nobody will mind.

Do you see the potential here? Imagine having a list of 1000 or 10000 and being able to "mail" them a dozen times a day!

My parting Twitter tip for you is this: to tweet as often as possible. If you intersperse a few promotions along with some helpful and valuable non-promotional links, then your followers won't mind at all. Once they realize that you are trustworthy, they'll want to click on your links and will even start anticipating your future tweets.

You don't need to spend hours and hours on Twitter to make it work for you. A mere half an hour a day or less of interacting with people or automating some of your tweets (using software) will be more than enough to strengthen your relationship with your followers and to drive traffic. Once you realize how easy it is to drive hundreds of targeted visitors with 140 characters or less, you'll be hooked.
