The old saying is that the diagonal of HD TV should be equal to a quarter of the distance from which you watch TV, but that's not as easy as it looks. For TVs with full high definition (Full HD 1080p, 1920 x 1080) the recommended viewing distance is only 2.5 times the diagonal.
When choosing the size of the flat screen TV set you can forget all the theorems and buy a TV that suits you. The most important thing is that you shouldn't be able to see the individual pixels of the screen. When choosing a diagonal, remember that the widescreen will offer a smaller display area at the same diagonal than a 4:3 TV. Higher resolution allows you to sit closer to the screen than you are used to.
With HDTVs the pixel size is so small that you would have to watch TV from a very close distance to see the individual pixels. It is important that your TV meets your requirements for image quality. For this reason, do not worry the larger diagonal TVs and simply buy one that you feel comfortable with or fits your budget.
When selecting a TV, also keep in mind that you want to keep your TV for some time, so buying a model with equipment for which you have no use (e.g. 3D), is throwing money out the window. Instead, save and get a less equipped TV, but with a larger screen size.
When getting diagonals of 40 "and larger try to focus on TVs with Full HD resolution, especially if you have a smaller room and want to watch a large screen TV from a close distance. Those who are seriously thinking about getting a Blu-ray player should just choose Full HD TV with a bigger diagonal.
Here you have to be careful about cheaper Full HD LCD models that do not have enough quality image processing and motion compensation. You will see the problem with a fast moving image blurring or when scrolling subtitles are not sharp.
