With the current economic downturn and pressures on incomes and jobs, the prospect of another expensive Christmas is something that for many sends a shiver down their spine.
Fact is that in today's modern society of highly-commercialised Christmases, gifts are becoming increasingly expensive and complicated with items such as the Playstation 3, iPod, iPhones and other electronic gadgets adorning many a Christmas present wish list.
It's strange in a way however that while many love the idea of a traditional Christmas, they still feel the need to provide the latest and greatest gifts for friends and relations. In reality, a step back in time may be the best option, offering personalised gifts that not only mean more but won't break the bank balance.
One idea is to consider making home crafts for the perfect Christmas gift. As with many things, basic skills have been lost thanks to the modern age of convenience but with nothing more than a little time and effort, old skills and traditions can be easily revived.
Some examples of gifts that can be quickly, easily and fairly cheaply created in the kitchen might include Christmas cookies, home flavoured cooking oils, jams and preserves and perhaps a home brewed beer or wine. Other options could be home made sloe gin or blackcurrant vodka, but these need to be thought out in advance for the collection and use of seasonal berries.
Now we're not saying that these ideas are cost free or the perfect present for all, especially for teenage children, they do however provide an opportunity and alternative for close friends and family.
Although the idea of home made Christmas presents may at first sound a little daunting, they really do offer a great alternative and one that is far more personal and meaningful than the latest CD or DVD.
