Trying to Understand the Climate of Delhi

Trying to Understand the Climate of Delhi

If one sits and starts commenting on Delhi's weather it would take very little time. To put it in basic terms Delhi's hot in the summers and cold in the winter, that sounds basic enough, but life's not so basic. Delhi's weather has been the topic of many discussions around town, especially, the monsoon. The monsoon of Delhi keeps everyone on their toes, as it is next to impossible to second guess the rain Gods here. They come and go as they please and create havoc in the city for the time period they are here. Look at the state of Delhi today, who in their wildest dreams would have imagined that Delhi is going to get the amount the rainfall it did. Everyday while going to work I think, that's it, its done, its finished, sun is shining brightly no more rains and literally out of the blue the heaven's open up. Delhi has seen an exorbitant amount of rainfall this year sending the city into a tizzy, massive traffic jams, water coming up to the knee, stalled vehicles have been the story of this year's monsoon. Even the Yamuna which is barren for most part of the year, is about to cross the danger mark, with the water rising dramatically.

Summers in Delhi are especially hot and dry, the average temperature ranges from 25 degrees to 46 degree Celsius. Delhi summer is very cumbersome and bearing the heat is no child's play, May and June are considered to be the hottest months of the year. In comparison to the summer the winters are very short, it generally starts from the middle of November and lasts till about mid February. The cold waves coming from the Himalayan region make Delhi very chilly and the temperature drops to as low as 3 to 4 degrees in peak winter. Delhi every year also faces the problem of smog and fog, reducing the visibility drastically in the city. If you are looking to visit Delhi, the best time is during October-November or February-March. During October-November, the atmosphere is little bit cool with sunny weather in mid day. February-March is the time when the nights are cool and the days filled with bright sunshine. This is the time when you can enjoy the best in Delhi.
