Trust The Efficiency Of Only The Right Testing Techniques To Detect Early Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is among the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in women after skin cancers

. The American Cancer Society estimates that over 192,000 new cases were in the United States during 2009. At the same time period, over 40,000 women were expected to die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second most frequent cancer killer of woman in America. Despite the increase of breast cancer among women the mortality rate has begun to decline recently. The increased survival rate is the result of high screening rates and improved adjuvant therapy.

The ideal screening exam for early breast cancer detection is to find cancers prior to causing symptoms. The exams doctors use are created to find cancer in symptom free people. The key here is early detection. The goal is to find the breast cancer in women before it spreads beyond the breasts. Breast cancer screening exams greatly increase the chances of finding cancer still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and the extent it has spread are of the most important factors in predicting the outlook for a woman with the disease. The majority of doctors hold that early detection saves thousands of lives each year.

There are several techniques to diagnose breast cancer. The following are the most common.

Mammogram. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. Mammograms are widely used to screen for breast cancer. If an abnormality is find on a screening mammogram, your doctor may recommend a diagnostic mammogram to further evaluate that abnormality. Mammograms have never been more widely used than now. According to recent findings, mammograms offer considerable benefit for women in their 40s. Even though mammograms are great for early breast cancer screening, they have limitations. A mammogram may miss some cancers, and it may lead to false positives.

Breast ultrasound. Ultrasound uses sound waves to render images of structures deep within the body. Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to help determine whether a breast abnormality is likely to be a fluid-filled cyst rather than a breast tumor.

Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). An MRI machine uses a magnet and radio waves to create pictures of the interior of your breast. Before a breast MRI, you receive an injection of dye. There is no evidence right now that MRI will be an effective screening tool for women at average risk. Although MRI is more sensitive than mammograms, it also has a higher false-positive rate.

Biopsy. A biopsy to remove a sample of the suspicious breast cells helps determine whether cells are cancerous or not. The sample is sent to a laboratory for testing. A biopsy sample is also analyzed to determine the type of cells involved in the breast cancer, the aggressiveness (grade) of the cancer and whether the cancer cells have hormone receptors.
