Trouble In Paradise For California Beach Weddings

Trouble In Paradise For California Beach Weddings

Getting married on a soft sandy beach with the backdrop of the sparkling azure ocean

is many couples" idea of a dream wedding, but for many local residents it can be a nightmare.

Steven Olges, a local resident in San Diego, California, is fed up with the increasing number of beach weddings in the city as wedding planning companies profit from the public beaches in front of hotels such as Hotel Coronado.

Olges wrote a letter to city officials and accused one company, A Beautiful Wedding, of exploitation.

"Summer 2011 saw an explosion in this activity with no less than five weddings occurring on one Saturday afternoon," he wrote.

The website of A Beautiful Wedding lists Coronado as a popular destination for destination weddings, and includes other beaches in the Californian city such as Windansea in La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma and Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas.

In his letter, Olges highlighted that the intrusion of the trucks and equipment required for the beach weddings created a problem for people visiting the beach and passers by.

Using a recent event at Ocean Boulevard and RH Dana Place, Olges explained: "Raphael"s Party Rentals had a lift-gate truck conveniently double parked on Ocean Boulevard while discharging party paraphernalia destined for the Jamie & Deo"s Wedding beach venue."

Coronado Councilwoman Carrie Downey, agreed with Olges and said. "There is no place for a large vehicle to park and unload and load. We have to find a way to do that without impacting traffic, the beach or the environment."

During a council meeting, Casey Tanaka, Coronado"s Mayor, said that he wasn"t against destination weddings on the beach, even those organised by commercial companies but he is aware of the impact they can have on the beach after officiating at a small wedding earlier this year.

At present, the city does not allow commercial weddings to take place on a beach but it does require a minor-use permit if more than 25 wedding guests are expected to attend the ceremony. Tanaka suggested lowering this number to ten guests.

Councilman Al Ovrom pointed out the liability issue with weddings on the beach and the inconvenience caused to members of the public who are trying to get by.

"We"re the deepest pocket. If something goes wrong, they"re not going to sue Raphael"s, they"re going to sue us," he commented.

The council members are planning to study the issue further and come up with recommendations.

Tropical weddings on picturesque beaches are on the increase as brides and grooms all over the world seek a unique and romantic setting for their nuptials. Many couples choose to get married abroad to save money, limit the guest list and combine the occasion with an exotic honeymoon.
